In 2020, Miley Cyrus is perhaps best known for her music. However, there was a time in which most thought of her as an actor. While she’s spent time away from that part of the entertainment industry, she’s not opposed to returning. Discover how Cyrus envisions getting back into film.

Cyrus’ first acting role was in the Tim Burton film Big Fish, where she was credited under her birth name, Destiny Hope Cyrus. A few years later, she landed the part of Miley Stewart (the character named for her) in the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. The sitcom aired for four seasons, plus a feature film.

While working on Hannah Montana, Cyrus launched her music career through Disney’s Hollywood Records, releasing three albums. In 2010, everything changed: Filming on the series came to an end, and Cyrus ended her relationship with Hollywood Records, later signing with RCA Records.

She transitioned away from acting

After leaving Disney, Cyrus turned her attention to the big screen. Following the romantic drama The Last Song, she starred in two films: the teen dramedy LOL opposite Demi Moore and the action-comedy So Undercover with Jeremy Piven. Both movies did poorly at the box office, but the latter turned her off from acting.

“I did one movie and I came back and said, ‘I’m never doing that again. I’m going to do music for the rest of my life,'” Cyrus said during a 2013 MTV special (via E! News). For the most part, Cyrus has stuck with that, aside from a few smaller gigs like her 2019 Black Mirror episode.

Cyrus directed her ‘Midnight Sky’ music video

Meanwhile, Cyrus’ music career has soared. Her last few albums — Bangerz, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, and Younger Now — have all been met with varying degrees of success. She’s stayed busy with live performances, touring, and, of course, writing and recording.

Cyrus utilized her experiences in Hollywood while filming the music video for her 2020 single “Midnight Sky,” stepping into a new role: director. “The environment that I created, what I’m wearing, the lyrics that I’m saying, and by directing it, I was able to finally capture my spirit on film,” she said in a behind-the-scenes video.

She wants to work behind-the-camera

As for her future on camera, Cyrus said she’s “always looking for scripts that are telling a story that I think are really interesting or also relatable, and I see myself in the character” in an interview for iHeartRadio’s Most Requested Ask Anything Chat.

But she wants to go deeper into the process. “I would love to now write and direct something,” she said. “Now that I’ve directed a [music] video, I definitely want to do more of that. So I would love to direct and be in front of or behind the camera.”

As for more music videos, Cyrus said, “I definitely want to continue to direct. But I’m someone that now that I’ve been able to accomplish three minutes, I want to go into films, where I really get to tell a full story. And I love creating characters and identities, so I would definitely like to develop characters also.”
