Dating back to her Disney days, Miley Cyrus has often been seen out and about with a dog in tow. She adores animals and has loved (and lost) a few during her time in the spotlight.

In honor of National Dog Day, here are the Disney Channel stars who have shown how much they care about their dogs even after they crossed the rainbow bridge.

Miley Cyrus

Cyrus has had many dogs over the years. But the sudden death of her young Yorkshire Terrier in December 2012 shook her. “I have never been so hurt in my life. My heart has never been so broken….. Lila my sweet baby girl has passed away,” Cyrus wrote on Twitter at the time.

In April 2014, there was another tragedy. “I don’t wanna say it because I don’t want it to be real,” Cyrus wrote on Twitter. “But my precious baby Floyd has passed away.” Floyd was an Alaskan Klee Kai she adopted in 2011. In 2015, Cyrus paid tribute to her deceased dogs with her album title, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz.

Demi Lovato

In July 2015, Demi Lovato took to Facebook to share that her “little angel,” Buddy, passed away in what was deemed a “tragic accident.” “His gentle loving spirit will live on in our hearts forever,” she wrote, speaking for herself and then-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama.

After splitting from Valderrama, Lovato continued to celebrate the life of Buddy for years to come. In July 2017, she wrote on Twitter, “I miss my baby so much.. see you in heaven little angel. I love you forever Buddy.” After Buddy’s death, Lovato went on to adopt Batman and Ella, who she now shares with fiance Max Ehrich.

Joe Jonas

Cyrus and Lovato’s former co-star from Disney projects such as Hannah Montana and Camp Rock, Joe Jonas, is also a dog lover. In September 2017, he brought home an Alaskan Klee Kai, Porky Basquiat, with then-fiancee Sophie Turner. Months later, the couple added the pup’s actual brother, Waldo Picasso, to their family.

A few weeks after Turner and Jonas’ July 2019 wedding celebration in France, there was an accident. Waldo got away from their dog walker, and was hit by a car and killed. Jonas later got a tattoo commemorating the pooch, writing on Instagram, “R.I.P. my little angel.”

Ashley Tisdale

High School Musical actor Ashley Tisdale is another dog-loving Disney star from the same era. A week after sharing that her dog, Maui, had been hospitalized, Tisdale revealed that the pooch had passed away from pancreatitis. “This pain is the worst pain I’ve ever felt,” she wrote on Instagram in June 2019.

“Maui was my soulmate, the connection was unlike any other,” she continued. A year later, after bringing home two new dogs, Tisdale still mourns Maui. “I can’t believe it’s been a year since my lil soulmate left this earth,” she wrote on Instagram. “I miss you everyday Maui.”

Finally, Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff has, like Cyrus, had several dogs over the years in the spotlight. And naturally, not all are still around. In June 2013, she tweeted a photo with her chihuahua, writing, “RIP my beautiful Lola girl my heart is broken:( Say a prayer for my little angel.”

In 2018, Duff said goodbye to another pet, Dubois, on Instagram, writing, “I will miss you everyday of my life my sweet boy. You were that once in a lifetime dog.” Over the years, Duff, an advocate for dog adoption, has brought home more canines, such as Lucy and Momo, from Los Angeles rescue organization Love Leo Rescue.
