Following a ten-year, on-again-off-again relationship, Cyrus and Hemsworth publicly announced their separation after less than a year of marriage. This news broke as Cyrus was spotted with Kaitlynn Carter, who she went on to date for about a month. Because of the timing, some thought she and Hemsworth divorced because of her infidelity.

“There are NO secrets to uncover here,” Cyrus wrote in a lengthy text post on Instagram in August 2019. “I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating.” She continued, “I love Liam and always will. BUT at this point I had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind.”

Cyrus ‘felt kind of villainized’

A year later, with the release of her single “Midnight Sky,” Cyrus is finally sharing what she went through in her own words. “I felt like my story, and my narrative had kind of been told for me over the past year,” she told Zane Lowe of Apple Music. “That experience of 10 years was told for me in one day from the eyes of a helicopter.”

“I felt kind of villainized.,” Cyrus continued, adding that she “shut down because it was kind of respectfully below me to engage with the press and the media at that time. It felt like I would rather be able to articulate this experience in a poetic way that also I can put back into my art,” she added of “Midnight Sky.”

This was a ‘pivotal moment in [her] life’

About a month before their split became public knowledge, Cyrus performed at Glastonbury Festival in England. “I actually think about Glastonbury as this real pivotal moment in my life because of what I was going through personally at the time,” she told Lowe. “Behind closed doors, I was dealing with that breakup.”

“It’s kind of funny, not ‘haha funny’ but annoying,” she said of how fans reacted. “How could you really have the whole story? You get these little moments of my life, but you don’t really know what’s going on,” she continued of what little the public is privy to in her personal relationships.

Having her divorce play out in public is only part of the story. Cyrus also spoke to how she coped during this time on a personal level. “I remember at a time of dealing with heartbreak that I thought, ‘I’m never going to be the same.’ All these things that I’m telling myself, it’s just not true.”

“I try to not be reactive,” she continued, explaining to Lowe how she allows logic to prevail in her decision-making. “That’s something I’ve gained over the past year. That wasn’t always a tool I’ve had in my belt.”
