After weeks of mourning the loss of her beloved Mary Jane, Miley Cyrus‘ new dog, Angel, made her first appearance on the singer’s social media platforms. The pup joins her many other canines, who’ve been well-documented over the years. Cyrus shared her inspiration for Angel’s name. But another past family pet may have also influenced her.

Like many of her fellow former Disney Channel stars, Cyrus loves animals. Specifically dogs. Growing up, she and her family had dogs, in addition to other pets. Once she struck out on her own, Cyrus continued to take in her own dogs, many of whom are rescues (meaning she didn’t get them from a breeder).

The artist has spoken about her love for all creatures countless times. She was even a vegan for a while before it became a health concern, and she needed to work fish back into her diet. After her split from ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, she kept nearly all of their pets, save for their dog, Dora, who lives with the actor.

Her dog, Mary Jane, died in 2021

As Cyrus brought home animal after animal, she never neglected those who came before them. In May 2012, she adopted a black-and-white pitbull, who she named Mary Jane. “Meet the newest addition to our family Mary Jane,” she tweeted, adding, “I love rescuing.”

After almost nine years with Cyrus, Mary Jane died in January 2021. In a lengthy Instagram Story, the musician revealed that Mary Jane had cancer, including “multiple types and tumors.” Referring to the dog as her “ANGEL,” Cyrus added, “Our connection was purely DIVINE. An incomparable love.”

Cyrus adopted Angel weeks later

In February 2021, Cyrus brought home another rescue pit bull in honor of her late dog. She detailed the pet’s difficult circumstances before being adopted. “I feel her here with me blessing this new member to my family who’s [sic] name is ‘Angel’ because she was delivered to me by one… My Mary,” she wrote.

Miley Cyrus’ new dog poses in the photos along with others, like Emu. “Not sure I will ever sleep again because I can’t take my eyes off of her,” she wrote of Angel. “Her halo shines for all to see and I can’t wait to show her off! It’s pretty cool having an Angel on a leash! She is illuminated by the aura of the late and great Mary Jane.”

The name Angel may have come from another place, too. In 2017, Cyrus did a BuzzFeed interview where she answered fan questions about her album Younger Now while playing with puppies. She spent the whole time holding one dog in particular, who she kept referring to as “my angel.”

“Your name is Angel. I named you Angel,” she told the pup, adding, “that was my grandma’s dog’s name.” She then asked someone off camera, “I have to keep the angel, don’t you think? But Liam [Hemsworth, her then-fiance] will be so mad.” Though she didn’t keep the dog, it found a loving home.
