“Party in the U.S.A.” is one of Miley Cyrus’s biggest hits. Unfortunately, in 2020, not many people in the U.S.A. are partying. If the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hasn’t kept people in their homes, protests against police violence and for Black Lives Matter have taken priority over parties. This year has made Cyrus rethink her classic song.

Cyrus was a guest on the Zach Sang: Just the Interviews Podcast on Aug. 14 to promote her new single “Midnight Sky.” She spoke about how much she’s changed since “Party in the U.S.A.” and what that song might mean to her today.

Miley Cyrus reflected on Party In the U.S.A.’ 11 years later.

Sang must have recorded this interview on Aug. 11, because Cyrus said it was the anniversary of “Party in the U.S.A.” She released the song Aug. 11, 2009.

“Today’s the anniversary of ‘Party in the U.S.A.,’” Cyrus told Sang. “I was thinking about where my head was at when I was performing ‘Party in the U.S.A.’ I really didn’t have an awareness or understanding of what that meant, what our country’s actually built on and what I want to see different.”

Miley Cyrus sees young people thinking about the country even younger

In 2009, Cyrus was 17. Since 2009, Cyrus has been able to see young people get more involved politically. The students of Parkland organized to fight gun violence. Young generations are currently participating in the protests.

“There’s an idea of, as we get older, we wake up but that’s happening from a younger age than even it happened for me,” Cyrus said. “I think from a level of looking kind of like as a generation, I think my generation, even the generation below me of my little sister and below that, we’re talking about issues from a lot younger.”

She may not want to ‘Party In the U.S.A.’ anymore

“Party in the U.S.A.” will always be part of Cyrus’s catalog, but it won’t be the kind of song she sings going forward. This year has prompted her to think about the future.

“I think the idea of awareness but I also think quarantine has kind of been a gift in that way,” Cyrus said. “In the beginning of quarantine we keep saying ‘I want to go back to the way it was.’ Do we actually want to go back to the way it was? I don’t think so. I think we want to say, ‘This ain’t working. Let’s restructure. Life is a series of adjustment. Let’s go and not feel rigid.’”

‘Midnight Sky’ represents where Miley Cyrus is now

Cyrus released “Midnight Sky” on Aug. 14. She says it reflects how she wants to deal with the real world, rather than living in fantasy.

This song, ‘Midnight Sky’ is really just a reflection of everyone kind of having this personal kind of woke moment. I feel like a lot of us are waking up. The Midnight Sky, I think, is kind of a road that feels like it could be nice to take with our head in the clouds. I feel like right now as a society we don’t want to live with our head in the clouds. I think that is a cool message to tell people create the environment and the world that you want to live in.
