At the young age of 28, Miley Cyrus has had quite the career. The Plastic Hearts artist exploded into superstardom thanks to her hit Disney Channel show, Hannah Montana. The show followed a normal teenage girl who was dealing with the challenges of growing up whilst also leading a double life as an international popstar.

While Cyrus made her debut as an actor, it was her singing chops that eventually captured audiences around the globe. Of course, the “Midnight Sky” singer seemed destined to sing since she’d come by her vocal talents naturally. Her father, and fellow Hannah Montana co-star, Billy Ray Cyrus, is also famed for his musical talents in the country genre. Donning her blonde wig, Miley showed that her unique timbre and vocal range could rival her father’s as she belted out songs like “Rockstar” and “Best of Both Worlds” during her tenure on Hannah Montana.

Miley Cyrus’ persona has eclipsed her music at times

When her stint at Disney was over, Miley continued growing her fan base by releasing songs like “Can’t Be Tamed”, “We Can’t Stop”, and “Wrecking Ball.” Over time, Miley became known not just for her musical talents but for her over the top performances and appearances as well. It seemed to many that the Plastic Hearts artist was constantly doing things for shock value. Whether she was twerking at the VMAs or showing up half-naked to award shows, the singer managed to make headlines no matter what decisions she chose to make.

Of course, Miley’s decisions are often what makes her such a controversial and polarizing figure. Critics have often accused the singer of not being authentic because what she says today might directly contradict what she does tomorrow. But in a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Miley shared that she isn’t as fickle as some people may assume. Instead, the singer shared that her deeply empathetic nature makes her susceptible to constant change which, in turn, affects her behavior and how she interacts with the world. Miley admits there’s a sadness to being so constantly changed, but she’s managed to accept this about herself.

Why the ‘Plastic Hearts’ singer says goodbye to herself every night

“I am not the person I was yesterday,” Miley shared. “Last night cutting with Stevie Nicks [referring to a song they recorded for her album Plastic Hearts] on the phone, that changed me forever. Everything changes me forever. I will never be who I was yesterday, in a way that every night before I go to sleep I say goodbye to myself because that person is done. There’s a sadness to it sometimes because I do evolve very quickly because I’m very absorbant, and recently I’ve had to do an inventory of what I’ve owned as mine that isn’t mine.”

It’s certainly interesting that Miley’s personality is so ever-changing. Though what she describes makes sense when you look at the body of work that she’s put out throughout the years. For example, Plastic Hearts and Younger Now don’t necessarily feel as if they could come from the same artist. And in a way, they don’t. After all, Miley said goodbye to the version of herself who wrote “Malibu” years before she became the Miley that wrote “Never Be Me.”
