Miley Cyrus has developed a thick skin over the course of her career and even found a way to put a positive spin on negative comments — especially when they come from another legendary singer. Cyrus said she took Cher’s criticisms of her in stride, believing it’s a compliment that the icon noticed her.

Cher was critical of Miley Cyrus

Back in 2013, Cyrus got everyone’s attention when she performed with Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards.

At the time, Cher told USA Today, “I’m not old-fashioned. She could have come out naked, and if she’d just rocked the house, I would have said, ‘You go, girl.’”

She continued, “It just wasn’t done well. She can’t dance, her body looked like hell, the song wasn’t great, one cheek was hanging out. And, chick, don’t stick out your tongue if it’s coated. If you’re going to go that far, then think about it before you do it.”

She told  E! News that she wanted Cyrus to “just be better, do better,” saying, “I don’t give a sh*t if she comes out naked.”

“Maybe she’s thrilled and delighted — everyone’s talking about it,” Cher added. “And so, that’s almost as good as it being great, you know. Especially kind of in this day and age. It doesn’t make any difference if you’re good. It just makes a difference if people are talking about it.”

Cher (sort of) apologized

Cher later took to Twitter to kind of apologize for being so critical, tweeting, “I’m a little ashamed. I didn’t keep my big opinionated mouth shut … What I should have said (is) ‘I didn’t like (the performance) that much, but she’s Pushing The Envelope, being an ARTIST.”

Cher added, “She’s talented & DIDNT COMMIT A FELONY. But somehow my ego had 2 get ITS 2 CENTS IN!”

In case anyone thought Cher’s tweets were the superstar saying she was sorry, she made it crystal clear. “Ps this is Not an apology 4 what I Thought, its a Reminder, that if I don’t practice my principles, I loose Them.”

Miley Cyrus said Cher’s criticism is a compliment

During an interview with Billy Idol for SiriusXM’s Live Transmission Christmas, Cyrus shared her positive outlook on dealing with hate — something she’s had her fair share of.

“The amount of people that have talked sh*t about my records or what I’m doing, you know, I had Cher come after me on Twitter, but that’s when I thought I had really made it. I’m like, ‘Oh, Cher gives a f*ck about what I’m doing.'”

The singer continued, “She was mad that I was sticking my tongue out all the time and all that shit. And I’m like, ‘Yo, I pissed Cher off, I really made it.’”

Cyrus found the perfect way to handle other celebs who were critical of her racy antics. “When these legends and these icons and these artists that we look up to… f*cking hate us, it’s still a compliment.”
