Allison Janney’s early work and rise to fame

Janney’s love of acting started when she was a theatre major at Kenyon College in Ohio. While attending college, Janney met actors Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, who inspired her to continue acting. Following the couple’s advice, Janney embarked on an acting career, which began in 1989 with a guest spot on the CBS comedy Morton & Hayes.

Her resume grew with parts on shows such as Law & Order and films roles in Primary Colors and Drop Dead Gorgeous. In 1999, she landed her big break when cast as C.J. Gregg on The West Wing. For seven seasons, Janney portrayed the Press Secretary to Martin Sheen on the political drama. Following the show’s cancellation in 2006, Janney continued to work steadily in film and television.

In 2013, she landed her next big TV role as Bonnie Plunkett on the CBS sitcom Mom. The series revolved around Bonnie’s relationship with her estranged daughter Christy Plunkett (Anna Faris) and the women’s battle with alcoholism. Mom ran for eights seasons, with its series finale airing in May 2021.
