The latest episode of NCIS revealed another shocking death. We don’t think we can take much more of this after Jimmy’s wife, Breena, died from COVID-19. Here’s what happened last time on a very depressing episode of NCIS.

NCIS Season 18, Episode 9 (titled “Winter Chill”), opens with McGee reading an email from Sloane. The week before, she decided to stay in Afghanistan to continue Darya’s work at Safe Passage. In her email, she apologizes for not saying goodbye in person. She also tells the team what they can have from her office.

Sloane lets McGee have her electric stapler because he borrowed it so much. She leaves her shiatsu massage bar to Ellie because she “borrowed it every chance she could.” Finally, she leaves Carl, her goldfish, to Nick. She doesn’t mention Gibbs, Palmer, or Kasie (it’s later revealed that Sloane gives Kasie her elephant painting). This goodbye letter read more like a will, but that’s likely because it was foreshadowing the death that would take place later in the episode.

Gibbs gets a call from Tobias Fornell, who seems to be in a great mood. Fornell says he has some big news to share, but he wants to do it in person. He ends the call with ‘Ciao, baby,’ which puzzles Gibbs because it’s out of character.

Fornell can’t contain his excitement, so he decides to stop by the NCIS office and tell Gibbs in person. He decided he’s going to move to Costa Rica. He heard about Sloane’s original plan and figured this would be a good move for him.  Although Gibbs says Fornell’s move doesn’t bother him, it’s clear he’s sad to see another friend go. He snaps at Ellie and storms off after she asks how he feels about losing Sloane and now Fornell.

Kasie struggles with personal issues

Kasie’s sister lost her job, so she had to move back home and live with their mother. Kasie’s mother and sister haven’t been getting along, and Kasie’s mother gets so upset that she ends up going to the emergency room with chest pains. Kasie tells Palmer she’s worried about her mother. She’s also upset that some people seem to go through life without any major problems.

Palmer tells her no one goes through life unscathed. He also tells her that the bad times make you appreciate the good times. “Stars can’t shine without darkness,” says Palmer. “No one is immune to suffering.”

Gibbs gets a frantic call from Tobias. He later finds out that Emily is in the hospital after a drug overdose. Tobias found Emily in her room with a bottle of pills next to her. He says the bottle had the name of her friend’s grandmother on it (Sylvia Carruthers).

Tobias thought Emily overcame her drug addiction, but he was wrong. One detail he mentions is that the spirit of his dead wife, Diane, was there. This was clearly a clue that Emily wasn’t going to make it. A doctor comes out with an update, but it’s not good news. The doctor tells Tobias that Emily is dead.
