NCIS has been on the air for 17 seasons. This is quite impressive considering many shows don’t make it past three or four seasons. Mark Harmon once said audiences continue to tune in because the show is mostly character driven. Although cases are featured in each episode, for the most part the focus is on the characters. Viewers want to know what will happen next with Gibbs, Bishop, Torres, and McGee, so they keep coming back for more.

One reason the NCIS cast works so well together is that they genuinely seem to like each other. Many cast members have described NCIS as family. During an interview with Stephen Colbert, Harmon said his favorite NCIS moment was when the cast and crew worked late and had dinner after their day ended.

“The other night we were out in Hollywood working late, 9:30 at night,” said Harmon. “Most of the cast, like 95% of the cast was working, and we all got together and went to dinner. That doesn’t happen. So, you’ve got a bunch of people there who love their job, and there’s a responsibility in that, and there has been over a number of years. You work with these people every day, and it only works when people want to be there.”

So, what will become of NCIS going forward? Will we get more of Gibbs and the agents viewers have come to know and love? You can breathe a sigh of relief because NCIS will indeed return for an 18th season. CBS announced 23 shows will be renewed for the 2020-2021 season. Unfortunately, a CBS insider told TV Insider that Carol’s Second Act, Broke, Tommy, and Man with a Plan have been canceled.

What to expect for ‘NCIS’ season 18

There’s a lot in store for NCIS Season 18. NCIS producer Frank Cardea told TV Insider the show will explore fresh story lines this season. One story they will cover is an episode focused on McGee and his wife Delilah. It will be interesting to get a peek inside their life with their kids. A McGee-Delilah episode was supposed to take place during season 17, but this wasn’t possible thanks to the coronavirus outbreak.

Another story line that will return is the one about the opioids. “The opioids will come back next year,” Cardea said. Ducky and Gibbs will also have an episode focused on them and how they met. Furthermore, we’ll see a kinder, gentler Gibbs in season 18.
