Netflix finally shared an update on the live-action ‘One Piece’ adaptation in 2021 after several years of development

The start of production marks a huge milestone for the One Piece adaptation, which was first revealed way back in 2017. One Piece manga creator Eiichiro Oda signed on to executive produce the series, but the project didn’t make much progress until Netflix ordered a 10-episode series in 2020. Then, coronavirus (COVID-19) delays slowed down production.

Fans finally received the first sign of progress in September 2021, when Netflix shared a peek at the script on Twitter. The image showed the cover page of episode 1, titled “Romance Dawn” — the same title as the manga series’ first volume.

“IT’S HAPPENING!!!!!!” Netflix captioned the image.

Emily Rudd shared photos from day 1 of Netflix’s ‘One Piece’ filming in January 2022

It seems Netflix is finally going full steam ahead with this project. Just one month after the script reveal, Oda revealed the One Piece cast. Now, two months later, the series has already jumped into production.

Rudd took to Instagram to mark the occasion, sharing a carousel of random images from her first day. The photos included her chair on set, labeled “Nami,” a vase of flowers, and the anime version of her character. Additionally, the Fear Street star shared a selfie in which she rocked a One Piece T-shirt and a huge smile.

“Day one done,” Rudd captioned the post. “Pinch me.”

Rudd hasn’t been the only person to tease One Piece production. On Jan. 30, showrunner Steven Maeda shared a photo of a straw hat keychain with the caption, “The Day of the Beginning.”

It’s not yet clear how much time Netflix will spend filming One Piece, but it’s certainly a positive sign to see the series finally moving forward. Hopefully, the next step will be a release date announcement in the coming months.
