Noah Cyrus has spoken out about struggling to grow up in a famous family. She was only seven when her sister, Miley Cyrus, landed the role of Hannah Montana. From then on, through her solo music career, Noah had to deal with living in her sister’s shadow. She was also growing up the daughter of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus.

Now 20, Noah has persevered with her career and with her mental health. She says she’s in the best place she’s been personally this year, and she’s just released her latest EP, The End of Everything. Noah was a guest on the Zach Sang: Just the Interviews Podcast on June 4 to talk about her new EP. She told Sang she just has one request of people who may still compare her to her famous family.

Noah Cyrus doesn’t take it personally when people compare her to Miley or Billy Ray

After singles like “July” and “Make Me (Cry) since 2016, Noah feels secure that she’s established herself as an artist. She can handle comparisons to her famous family members as long as they’re not mean.

“I think they’ve slowed down,” she told Sang. “I don’t really check anymore and it’s not like I checked [before]. The comparisons aren’t what messed me up as much as the online bullying. Comparisons were just annoying. I didn’t really see the point of that. They definitely slowed down which would be on the other people, not me, if you’re still comparing me to my family member because I’m clearly my own person. I’m this woman that makes her own music and successfully.”

Just please call her Noah Cyrus, not Miley Cyrus’s sister

Being Miley Cyrus’s younger sister has defined Noah longer than she would have liked. It started when she was seven, but now that she’s 20 it’s definitely time for people to learn her name.

“So it’s just out of respect for me and it should’ve been out of respect for me since I was a kid, just to call me by my name,” she said. “That’s the only thing I ask. So the comparisons and all that bullsh*t, I don’t even think about the comparisons.”

She is getting the recognition she deserves

The continued success of Noah’s music career shows that people are appreciating her own music and what she shares about mental health. She says it’s not even the recognition that drives her.

“I think people are listening to me,” she said. “I don’t go about it as recognition I deserve, but I’m happy that people are listening to me and seeing me for the artist that I truly am and know that I have the voice that I have and I write the music that I write because it’s important to me. And that I write about something important. I think that does make a difference.”
