First, there was Sour, but will there be a Sweet? Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album, Sour, released on May 21, 2021, and has since been on repeat for many of her biggest fans.

The 18-year-old High School Musical: The Musical: The Series actor has poured her heart into some tear-jerking breakup songs on the album, as well as the post-breakup power anthem “Good 4 U.” Sour does not contain a single happy love song. Here’s why that came as a surprise to fans, and why they think a Sweet follow-up album is on the way.

Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Sour’ is filled with breakup songs

It all started with “Driver’s License,” Rodrigo’s first single from Sour. The song tells the story of Rodrigo finally getting her driver’s license, an accomplishment she had “always talked about” with her ex-boyfriend. However, now that they’ve broken up, she can only drive “through the suburbs” and cry that she can no longer share the accomplishment with him.

“Driver’s License” went viral when Rodrigo posted the song on TikTok. Fans immediately began to speculate that the song was about ex-boyfriend and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett. “Driver’s License” referred to a “blonde girl,” whom fans believed was Bassett’s new girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter.

Sour‘s other songs featured similar themes and potential references to Bassett and Carpenter. For the most part, Rodrigo sang about her ex’s betrayal and the relationship’s downs. Fans were ultimately surprised to hear that she did not include any love songs on the album, considering that she previously shared a few snippets of love songs on her social media accounts. However, there seems to be a chance that those songs will come later.

Her fans think a ‘Sweet’ album is next

Some of Rodrigo’s fans are convinced that a Sweet album containing those previously-teased love songs will arrive at a later date. As Paper reported, the theory began via a TikTok user. The user @codyjohnathan pointed out in a video that Rodrigo’s longtime fans may recall her posting on Instagram “snippets of her songs as she writes them, like, acoustically.” The teased music, which is no longer available on her account, seemed to be about love.

“When I was listening to Sour, I was shocked to see that literally none of the songs were love songs,” Johnathan continued, revealing their theory about a potential upcoming album. “My theory is that there’s a second album coming called Sweet, that has all of the sweet parts of a relationship and not the sour ones.”

Rodrigo’s collaboration with Sour Patch Kids has added fuel to the theory. After all, the candy’s slogan is “First they’re sour, then they’re sweet.”

Rodrigo’s unreleased music no longer appears on her Instagram page, but another TikTok user pointed out that fans can find the songs on Rodrigo’s Genius page. Indeed, a quick search through the songs on her page will reveal songs like “Love,” originally posted on her TikTok, and “White Flowers,” which she once shared on Instagram. The available lyrics for “Love” reveal all the reasons why Rodrigo loves someone. Meanwhile, “White Flowers” talks about feeling hopelessly in love.

Rodrigo has yet to confirm if she has planned a Sweet album. For what it’s worth, the singer has stated that she looks up to Taylor Swift, who has been known to hide cryptic clues in her social media posts and in her music. It wouldn’t come as a surprise to see Rodrigo use the same tactic.
