Olivia Rodrigo released her newest single, ‘good 4 u,’ on May 14

Rodrigo dropped her latest track at midnight on May 14 for her fans. The single came out on the same day as the second season of her show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Many fans were excited about “good 4 u” after Rodrigo teased the song with a snippet. The short clip put the song’s contrasting sound, as opposed to her first two singles, on full display.

There was already a great divide between the power-ballad “drivers license” and the upbeat, funky “deja vu.” Now, Rodrigo is showing even more of her range with a burst of pop rock energy in “good 4 u.”

‘Good 4 u’ came out with a high school-themed music video

Rodrigo proved more of her range with the video concept in “good 4 u.” The video mostly took place in a high school. The star played a cheerleader who sarcastically made her way through the peppy moves. She walked into another person in the locker room then admired herself in the mirror before putting on black gloves.

Her character was a troublemaker, pushing grocery store items on the floor as she selected some gas to light her room on fire. Toward the end of the music video, Rodrigo’s character sang in front of the room lit up in flames.

The end of the music video showed her character walking into the woods, toward a lake. The final clip had Rodrigo in the body of water, swimming toward the viewer, as her eyes turned red.

A fan on TikTok showed side-by-side similarities between Rodrigo’s “good 4 u” and Diablo Cody’s 2009 movie, Jennifer’s Body. The fan played a clip of Rodrigo’s character being thrown into the air as a cheerleader. Then the user showed the character Jennifer (Megan Fox) twirling a flag in a cheerleader uniform.

Next, the TikToker paralleled the scene of Rodrigo’s character singing into a ring light with Jennifer looking into a small mirror. The scenes of Rodrigo’s character walking into the woods was compared to Jennifer doing the same thing. The wide shots of the lakes even looked pretty similar, when played back-to-back.

The end shot, with Rodrigo’s part swimming and going underwater, also paralleled Jennifer in the film.

Rodrigo has yet to name her references publicly, but the parallels are pretty impressive. You can watch “good 4 u” above.
