Hollywood is mourning the death of a great: Academy Award-winning actor Olympia Dukakis. The longtime actor died at the age of 89 in May 2021 after six decades in the industry, including acclaimed roles in films and TV shows such as Moonstruck, Sinatra, and Joan of Arc.

Olympia Dukakis had a celebrated career

Dukakis was born and raised in the Boston, Massachusetts area and earned her Master of Fine Arts degree at Boston University. She moved to New York and found her way into the theatre world, with acting credits dating back as early as 1951. The young actor first became widely recognized for her award-winning role in the off-Broadway play Man Equals Man.

Dukakis eventually crossed over from the stage to the screen in the 1960s and ’70s. By the mid-1980s, she had established herself as one of Hollywood’s leading ladies with serious acting chops to match.

Dukakis wed her husband, actor Louis Zorich, in 1962. The two raised three children together remained happily married until his death in 2018.

Olympia Dukakis was in Hollywood for decades and won an Oscar for ‘Moonstruck’

It was Dukakis’ role in the 1987 movie Moonstruck where she showed just how strong of an actor she was. The longtime actor won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role, while her co-star, the incomparable Cher, won Best Actress.

Moonstruck catapulted Dukakis into other beloved roles such as Rosie in Look Who’s Talking and Look Who’s Talking Too and Clairee Belcher in Steel Magnolias.

Dukakis continued to work until the time of her death, including lauded more recent roles such as her reprisal of her Tales of the City character Ana Madrigal in the 2019 Netflix reboot of the series.

She resided in Montclair, New Jersey for much of her life, where a typical home costs about $786,000, according to Zillow. In 1999, Dukakis moved to a loft in Manhattan.

In 2013, Dukakis was recognized for her decades of contributions to film and television with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The 2020 documentary Olympia gives an in-depth look into the icon’s life and work, with praise from fellow acting greats such as Whoopi Goldberg and her Tales of the City collaborators Laura Linney and Armistead Maupin.
