The Fast and the Furious franchise has become very successful throughout its 18-year run. Keep reading to get all the details on the order of the films and learn more about each installment in the franchise.

‘The Fast and the Furious’

The Fast and the Furious started it all when it hit theaters on June 18, 2001. Cast members include Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Rick Yune, Chad Lindberg, and Johnny Strong. The movie grossed $155 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

‘2 Fast 2 Furious’

Two years later in 2003, a sequel to The Fast and the Furious premiered. In 2 Fast 2 Furious, Paul Walker resumed his role as Brian O’Conner. Tyrese Gibson, Eva Mendes, and Ludacris are among other additions to the cast. 2 Fast 2 Furious didn’t do as well at the box office compared to the original, earning $127 million.

A six-minute short film, The Turbo Charged Prelude, detailed the events immediately following The Fast and the Furious and prior to the sequel.

‘The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift’

The third installment in the franchise, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, has been the least successful of all the films in the franchise.

Premiering in June 2006, the film grossed $62 million. Lucas Black played the main character, Sean Boswell, a teenager who gets involved in drift racing in Tokyo.

‘Fast & Furious’

Fast & Furious, the fourth installment in the franchise, brought back original cast members Walker, Diesel, Brewster, and Rodriguez.

The film earned $155 million at the box office. A second short film became available, Los Bandoleros, this time with Diesel as co-writer.

‘Fast Five’

As the name suggests, Fast Five is the fifth film in the franchise. It’s the fourth highest grossing film in the franchise, making $209 million. The film has a solid score on Rotten Tomatoes: 83% of people who watched the film liked it.

‘Fast & Furious 6’

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson joined the cast of Fast & Furious 6 in 2013. The film earned $238 million and continued following the characters played by Diesel, Walker, Brewster, Rodriguez, and Gibson.

‘Furious 7’

Actor Jason Statham joined the cast of the seventh film, Furious 7. In a sad turn of events, Walker, who had been the main character in the franchise, died in a car accident during his time off from shooting the film in Nov. 2013 at 40 years old. The film ranks at the top-grossing film in the franchise.

‘The Fate of the Furious’

In 2017, The Fate of the Furious made $226 million. The eighth installment saw additions of other big names to the cast, Charlize Theron and Kurt Russel.

Don’t expect the franchise to slow down. The ninth installment, Fast & Furious 9, is in pre-production. And the tenth installment, Fast & Furious 10, has been announced for 2021.
