‘Outer Banks’ Star Chase Stokes Reveals How He and Girlfriend Madelyn Cline Separate ‘Business’ From ‘Pleasure’
Outer Banks stars Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline took their relationship off-screen more than one year ago, and they haven’t looked back since. Of course, a relationship between co-workers always has its risks, but Stokes isn’t worried. According to the actor, he and Cline carefully approach keeping their on-set and home lives separated. Here’s how he says they make it work.
Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline started dating after ‘Outer Banks’ Season 1
Many Outer Banks fans have loved the relationship between Stokes’ character, John B., and Cline’s character, Sarah. The actors themselves share plenty of chemistry, so it didn’t come as a total surprise to some fans when they announced their real-life relationship in 2020. However, according to Stokes, he and Cline didn’t become a couple until after Outer Banks Season 1 wrapped.
Stokes explained to Us Weekly that he and Cline felt a connection when they quarantined together, along with the rest of the cast, during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. They started as friends, but the relationship quickly developed into something more.
“It’s just awesome to kind of go through such a tumultuous time in the world with somebody that not only do you trust, but you love and care about,” he told the publication. “She’s such a sweet human being, and she’s so great with communication. So, a lot of the things that we established through lockdown, we had kind of already known about each other.”

Stokes and Cline spend plenty of time together as co-stars in a relationship. However, Stokes told TMZ in July 2021 that they’ve developed a balance between “business and pleasure.”
“We started with business first, and then everything sort of took shape afterward,” he said. “So, uh, we just keep it that way. We save everything for at home that needs to be at home, and everything else outside of that is work-related.”
Stokes added that a good friendship between the Outer Banks cast members has helped the couple avoid problems on-set.
“We’re so similar in the ways that we are…we’re all so close on the show, whether it’s being around me or Rudy, J.D., Maddie, whoever it is, there’s never any issues,” he continued.
What is Stokes’ advice to other co-worker couples? Keep things simple.
“Don’t overcomplicate it. Don’t make it something it doesn’t need to be,” he told TMZ. “Just have a good time with it.”
Their on-screen romance continues in ‘Outer Banks’ Season 2
Outer Banks Season 1 saw John B. and Sarah’s relationship move from class war to everlasting love quickly. Season 2, which airs on July 30, 2021, will explore their whirlwind romance even further. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cline teased John B. and Sarah will experience “highs and lows.”
“It’s this larger than life story and this larger than life love story — they’re like these star-crossed lovers where everything seems perfect, and everything is golden. And I didn’t want it to stay that way. I wanted there to be some conflict. Reality kind of slaps them in the face,” she explained. “They’re hit with the reality of the fact that they’ve been caught up in this whirlwind romance, and is it real? Is it going to last?”
