When Gerald Forbes (Billy Boyd) comes to see Jocasta and he tries to kill her by smothering her with a pillow, Ulysses kills him in self-defense of his mistress. It’s honestly hard to believe that they couldn’t have just found a way to cover up Forbes’ death, but Ulysses is hiding out in the woods to escape any criminal prosecution or worse.

Claire and Jamie visit Ulysses

Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) go to visit Ulysses to lift up his spirits and bring him some much-needed food and a distraction. Ulysses is unsure where to go from here, but he knows he’d do it all over again to save Jocasta’s life. He reveals to Claire and Jamie that Jocasta had a paper drawn up saying he’s a free man, but he chose to stay on and take care of her anyways. He didn’t want to leave her because he cared about her so much.

Jamie tells Ulysses he should leave North Carolina to avoid any trouble. He begins figuring out a way to help Ulysses in any way he can since he helped save his aunt’s life.

Jamie wants to help Ulysses

When Lord John Grey (David Berry) comes to see Jamie, he tells him he’ll be heading back to England soon. Jamie figures out a way to get him to take Ulysses with him and to safety. He’s taking him as a “man servant” so he can travel safely, but when he hits a British ship, he’ll officially be a free man. Apparently Jamie reminded John Grey that he may need a chess partner on the long sea voyage back home.

Ulysses has a bright future ahead of him

Ulysses will be free from the worry of any prosecution once he’s in England. He can start a whole new life there. The only thing missing will be Jocasta, who is sure to miss him just as much as he will miss her. He can now start a new life and become whatever he wants to be. His future is bright, and thankfully Jamie was able to get him away safely to a new chapter.

Jamie owed Ulysses a life debt for his saving of his beloved aunt. She’s alive because of what he chose to do, and Jamie couldn’t be more grateful. He repaid the favor in the best way he could, and thanks to him, Ulysses will live to see better days.
