Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) is forced to finally go into battle and fight against the regulators. Mid-battle, he spots Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) and one of his men shoots him. Jamie races against the clock to get him to Claire (Caitriona Balfe) to save his life, but it’s impossible. He’s gone and Jamie is more than broken.

Fans couldn’t stop talking about this moment in particular. Jamie is completely devastated from the loss and he uses it to motivate him to tell Governor Tryon that he is done with his obligation to the crown. He’s a changed man and it’s obvious to anyone watching.

“Jamie screaming ‘Help me’ telling Murtagh that he’d be okay, carrying him to Claire after he’d died, yelling at Claire to save his life and bring him back, saying ‘You canna leave me!’… that’s what got me. I sobbed. That performance was the best one I’ve seen since season 2, and I am floored,” said a Reddit user.

Fans admit to crying for Jamie as well as for Murtagh’s loss. “I was crying for Jaime from start to finish, but when Claire said ‘my friend’ I absolutely lost it,” another user wrote.

Murtagh held a special place in both Jamie’s heart and Claire’s. His loss has a profound effect on the two main characters.

Roger MacKenzie could also be gone in a sick twist of fate

Roger (Richard Rankin) was tasked with delivering a message to Murtagh on the eve of battle. He stumbles across a woman (and his ancestor) he helped once before, and her husband decides to beat him up with his friends for the trouble. It seems he thinks Roger was trying to get with his wife.

Roger goes missing and never returns. After the battle, they go searching for him and find men with bags over their heads hanging from a noose and dead. One of them is wearing Roger’s clothes and holding the white handkerchief Jamie gave him. Could Roger really be dead? Fans have their own theories.

“I can’t imagine Roger is actually dead,” a Reddit user wrote. “It was probably his MacKenzie ancestor bro who took his jacket. Otherwise they would have shown his face then and there.”

Another fan is hoping Roger is just somewhere in the woods delirious from getting beaten up. No one wants to believe he’s actually gone.

“They did knock him out before the battle, could be Roger is still passed out in the woods minus his stolen jacket. Seems convenient they don’t show what happened and then don’t show the hanged guy’s face,” someone else said.

The Redcoats won the day, but who knows how things will play out in the next episode of Outlander?
