‘Outlander’: Will Jamie and Claire Return To Scotland In Season 5?

Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Catriona Balfe) spent several seasons in his native country, but Season 5 will presumably keep them in North America as they continue to set up their new home on Fraser’s Ridge. But what are the chances that Jamie and Claire return to Scotland when 'Outlander' premieres later this year?

If there is one thing we have learned about Jamie Fraser over the past four seasons of Outlander, it’s that he loves Scotland more than just about anything. Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) spent several seasons in his native country, but Season 5 will presumably keep them in North America as they continue to set up their new home on Fraser’s Ridge. But what are the chances that Jamie and Claire return to Scotland when Outlander premieres later this year?

Balfe talks about Claire’s home

With production of Season 5 of Outlander underway in Scotland, Balfe recently took time out of her busy schedule to chat about Claire’s journey this season. The actress did not give away too many details, but she did say that playing Claire has been an amazing journey because she is so dynamic.

When it comes to the possibility of returning to Scotland, Balfe revealed that Claire has a different understanding of home than the average person. According to Express, Claire sees Jamie as her home, which makes perfect sense considering her journey these past four seasons.

“I think, definitely, for Claire, home is her life with Jamie,” Balfe shared. “Whereas, Jamie was always connected to Scotland and that was his home, Claire has always been trying to find out what home means to her.”

While Claire is happy as long as Jamie is around, the real question is whether or not he misses Scotland. If Jamie misses the place where he was born, the show could diverge from the books and have the couple revisit Scotland in Season 5 of Outlander.

Exactly how that would unfold is unclear, but it would be nice to see them back in Jamie’s native country. Given how the series tends to follow Diana Gabaldon’s novels as closely as possible, it is more likely that the two will remain in America for at least another season.

Sam Heughan opens up about Jamie’s journey

During a recent break in production, Jamie talked about the upcoming season and how Jamie will handle a new set of challenges. The actor appeared on a panel with Balfe, Sophie Skelton, Maril Davis, John Gary Steele, Toni Graphia, and Richard Rankin, and discussed how Jamie’s alliance with the governor will put him at odds with Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix).

As Outlander fans will recall, Jamie received official orders to hunt down Murtagh’s group of rebel soldiers. If Jamie does not follow the orders, he risks giving up his land to the British and letting down everyone who now calls Fraser’s Ridge their home.

At the same time, Jamie is not going to turn against his own family for political reasons. More than likely, Jamie will figure something out that satisfying all of the parties involved. But even if he comes up with a solution, Jamie and Claire know that the American Revolution is coming and that they need to be on the right side of things when the fighting begins.

Exactly what that means for our favorite time traveling couple is unclear, but we can trust that everything will work out in the end.

What lies ahead for Jamie and Claire in Season 5 of ‘Outlander’?

The upcoming season of Outlander is based on Gabaldon’s book, The Fiery Cross. While the cast has been mum on the details, we know that one of the big themes this season centers on family. This includes defining what family means, discovering how to protect a family, and how you keep everyone within a family united. For Jamie and Claire, the family theme runs deep as the couple continues to develop Fraser’s Ridge while adjusting to life as new grandparents.

In Season 4 of Outlander, Jamie and Claire’s daughter, Brianna (Skelton), travelled back in time to reunite with them in the New World. Brianna’s husband, Roger (Rankin), tagged along and the couple ended up having a child together before the season was out.

Brianna and Roger’s storyline is likely to become more significant as the series progresses, and the two are expected to play an important part in building Fraser’s Ridge next season. Exactly how this fits into Jamie and Claire’s story, however, is yet to be determined.

Starz has not announced when Season 5 of Outlander will premiere. The series is expected to return sometime this fall, as long as everything remains on schedule.
