One step forward, another step back. That probably sums up the feelings of Marty and Wendy Byrde, the money-laundering couple featured in Netflix’s Ozark. Ozark Season 4 finds the pair on the brink of getting out of the business for good. But of course, there are various obstacles in their path.

Viewers will have to wait for Ozark Season 4 Part 2 to find out how everything ends, but it seems like it’ll be a good time, with actor Alfonso Herrera (Javi Elizonndro) teasing the creators have “saved the best for last.”

‘Ozark’ Season 4 Part 1 delivered new challenges to the Byrdes

The first half of Ozark Season 4 begins immediately after Helen Pierce’s death and finds the Byrdes at Omar Navarro’s home. In a meeting, they’re surprised to learn that Navarro intends to step back and wants them to help him achieve a legitimate life. It feels like an impossible task, but the offer to have their debt to Navarro wiped motivates them to pull out all stops.

Somehow, they make the impossible possible, but Maya Miller goes back on the deal at the last minute and has the FBI arrest Navarro.

With that, his nephew Javi assumes control. Javi’s first order of business is to kill Darlene Snell for dealing drugs on cartel territory and unfortunately, Wyatt Langmore gets caught in the middle. After Ruth Langmore finds their bodies, she swears revenge against Javi, despite the Byrdes arguing against it.

Herrera on the remaining episodes of the show

After the first half of Ozark Season 4 was released on Netflix, Variety caught up with Herrera for an interview. In it, he discussed the character of Javi, his new role within the cartel, and how it would affect things.

“He’s aware of the power he has now and that makes him more comfortable in his skin,” he said of Javi heading the cartel. “There’s an aura to him that’s scary. That’s going to be very interesting to see work out in the second part.”

“It’s going to be interesting to see how he reacts to other characters,” Herrera continued. “And we’re going to see the relationship he has with his mother more fully. It is presented in a very small proportion in the first part of the story and it’s going to be a lot clearer and more important in the second part.”

Herrera spoke about Javi’s relationship with Marty and Wendy also. There’s been plenty of tension between them already, but Herrera noted, “In the second half of the season, he’s going to be a huge headache for the Byrdes, for Marty and for Wendy.”

While he did not elaborate, he teased it would be entertaining to watch.

“Everyone is sending me texts and emails asking me what’s going to happen,” he shared. “The only thing I can tell them is prepare to have your mind blown. The creators saved the best for last.”
