The wait for Ozark Season 4 has been a long one, but it gets closer by the day. The show first launched in 2017 and focuses on Marty Byrde, a financial advisor and family man who becomes involved with a Mexican drug cartel. Now in its final season, Ozark is expected to deliver a finale worthy of everything that has led up to it. While filming on Ozark Season 4 is still in progress, the director says it’s almost finished.

The ‘Ozark’ Season 3 finale makes for an intense fourth season

Ozark left off with the shooting death of Helen Pierce, at the hands of Omar Navarro. She had traveled to Mexico with Marty and Wendy Byrde to meet up with Navarro, expecting he would kill them for their missteps. But Navarro had realized there was still value in the Byrdes and decided to cut out Helen instead. After shooting her, he hugged Marty and Wendy and told them he looks forward to working with them even closer now.

“As good as Helen is, there’s other lawyers in the world,” showrunner Chris Mundy told Entertainment Weekly when asked why Navarro picked the Byrdes over Helen. “But Wendy and Marty have now pulled off two impossibilities for [Navarro].”

“One is getting a casino to launder through in the first place, which is sort of the holy grail of money laundering,” he continued. “And the second is that, at least in Navarro’s mind, their claim that they have the FBI on their side and can swing the power of the U.S. government in the intervention in the drug war against their rivals, that’s something virtually no one else can do, and that essentially tipped the scales for Marty and Wendy.”

As far as what to expect next season, Mundy said, ” I think it will be about if the Byrdes can they turn the biggest mistake of their lives into this huge advantage, and how much will karma catch up with them if they do?”

What’s the status of ‘Ozark’ Season 4?

Based on comments Jason Bateman (Marty Byrde) made to IndieWire, it appears that filming started in November 2020. It’s still in progress as of writing, but director Amanda Marsalis revealed in a September Instagram post that there’s just one episode left to shoot.

“On the set of @ozark,” she captioned a photo showing her working on the series. “Nearly done with the 4 episodes I’m grateful to be directing this season. 1 episode left after this for the cast and crew. Going to miss everyone so so much ♥️”

Marsalis’ update comes a couple weeks after Julia Garner (Ruth Langmore) told W Magazine that filming would conclude in October.

But when does ‘Ozark’ come back on?

There’s still no set release date for Ozark Season 4, but an early 2022 release date seems like, given the show is about to head to post-production.

More details are expected to be revealed at Netflix’s TUDUM event on Saturday, Sept. 25. Stay tuned to Showbiz Cheat Sheet for updates on that.
