A recap of what happened to Ben in ‘Ozark’

Fans will recall that by the end of Ozark Season 3, Ben had become a major liability for the Byrdes. He’d stopped taking his medication and was telling whoever would listen that his sister and brother-in-law were working for a Mexican drug cartel. Wendy had assured Omar Navarro that she would get him under control, but the last straw came after he exploded on Helen Pierce in front of her daughter and exposed her involvement with the cartel.

In a last-ditch effort to save him, Wendy took Ben out of town, but he continued to act out on the road. Realizing she would never be able to trust him, after he snuck off and attempted to flag down a police officer, she gave in and called Nelson. While they were out to dinner, she snuck out of the restaurant under the guise of using the bathroom as Nelson’s car pulled up in the parking lot.

After Wendy failed to come back to the table, Ben went outside to look for her. When he saw Nelson, he angrily approached him, thinking he did something to Wendy. “She’s fine and on her way home,” Nelson responded, before pulling a gun on Ben. Realizing the danger he was in, Ben panicked and promised not to say anything else about Helen. But Nelson just instructed him to get into the truck.

Inside, Ben cried and chided himself for not listening. He then apologized to Nelson and asked him to tell Wendy he was sorry too. “She’s the only thing that really loved me. And I always wanted her to be proud of me,” he told Nelson. “I just f*ck up too much you know, I just f*ck whatever up. And I’d just apologize and then f*ck up again…”

Then, he wondered: “You think she’d be proud of me now? The way I’m handling this? I think she would be… You tell her I’m sorry, and you tell her I forgive her. You can do that for me, can’t you?”

But Nelson didn’t respond. He just kept driving. When they finally stopped, it was at some isolated location, where Ben was ordered onto a tarp on the ground. He started to wonder if he was dreaming before Nelson shot him once at point-blank range.
