The first half of ‘Ozark’ Season 4 left several threads hanging

Ozark Season 4 kicked off with a flash-forward. The Byrdes were preparing to leave the Ozarks and return to Chicago. But they were forced off the road when a semi-truck swerved into their lane, leaving their fates in the air.

From there, the show cut to find the Byrdes at Navarro’s compound, where he tasked them with the job of helping him achieve immunity and the ability to go between Mexico and the United States freely. But it all backfired when Navarro was arrested, leading to his nephew, Javi, taking over for him.

Once he was in place, Javi immediately got down to business, notably shooting and killing Darlene Snell and Wyatt Langmore over Darlene’s refusal to stop growing drugs. After finding their bodies, Ruth Langmore came to the Byrde home demanding to know the person responsible. As soon as Jonah Byrde dropped his name, despite his parents’ warnings, Ruth stormed out with her gun to get revenge.

‘Ozark’ Season 4 Part 2 is about ‘marriage and family’

Showrunner Chris Mundy opened up about the second half of Ozark Season 4. It feels obvious that Javi will be a big focus, but Mundy reminded viewers to keep an eye out for Navarro too.

“For Navarro, he’s a survivor,” he told Entertainment Weekly when asked how the character would factor into the remaining episodes. “And so I think, at a point in the next season, he’s going to figure out if there’s still a play to be made from prison. He certainly won’t trust the Byrdes, but they’re a necessary evil in his life. So we obviously wanted him to be as pinned down as he possibly could be, but you haven’t seen the last of him, for sure.”

Mundy also teased the fate of the Byrde family.

“The final tease really comes down to Marty and Wendy,” he began.

“We usually frame everything through the marriage, as much as Ruth is this gigantic part of the show, obviously. For the Byrdes, at a certain point, the final seven to me are about, at what time is it healthy to stay in, and at what time is it healthy to get out, in terms of that partnership? And so, to me, I really think the back seven is pretty intensely about marriage and family,” he added. “And Ruth is an extension of that family.”

With that, it seems the family will have big decisions to make when it comes to their future. Hopefully, they’re the right ones.
