‘P-Valley’: Director Karena Evans Says the Show Was a Life-Changing Experience
Karena Evans helped bring Katori Hall’s drama series P-Valley to the screen. It was Evans’ first TV project so she knew she had to do the Starz drama justice. Set in Chucalissa, Mississippi, which is located within the Bible Belt, the series followed the personal and professional lives of Uncle Clifford (Nicco Annan) and the girls who danced for her at her strip club, The Pynk.
Evans called P-Valley a life-changing experience.
‘P-Valley’ Season 2 will debut June 3, 2022
After much anticipation and a near-two year wait, the doors of The Pynk are set to open on June 3, 2022. The series will kick off five months after the season 1 finale amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
“When darkness descends upon Chucalissa, errybody and they mama must fight tooth and talon to survive,” the P-Valley Season 2 Starz description says. “While some take flight to perilous new heights, others dig in their stilettos and stand their ground no matter the cost. Back at The Pynk, Autumn and Uncle Clifford grapple for the throne as new blood shakes up the locker room. Meanwhile, with the casino’s fate hanging in the balance, the local political machine kicks into overdrive. In these unprecedented times, death and danger lurk around every corner.”
Fans are eager to see what happens with Uncle Clifford and his ladies next, as the series was unlike anything we’ve seen on TV before.
Karena Evans says ‘P-Valley’ was a life-changing experience for her
Like fans of P-Valley, Evans says that shooting the series has been a life-changing experience for her.
“P-Valley is one of the most life-changing situations for me,” she told Teen Vogue. “I received this script at a time in my life and my career where I was calling for an opportunity to tell a story like that, to be able to specifically represent, authentically, a community that has been misrepresented forever.”
The series was the “Nice For What” director’s first TV project and she absolutely nailed it. Refusing to shy away from the nudity that’s involved in sex work or the physical strength it takes to strip, the authenticity in P-Valley is outstanding.
Uncle Clifford and Autumn are going to have some tension this season
As we saw in the teaser trailer, Uncle Clifford and Autumn (Elarica Johnson) are now running The Pynk together. Since Clifford is used to being the only boss, that’s certainly going to cause some friction and turmoil.
“It occurs five months after Autumn Night saves The Pynk,” creator Katori Hall said via YouTube. “Unfortunately, the pandemic has really come in and turned everything topsy turvy. it is a business based on gathering, it is a business based on intimacy. And, the writer’s room was totally inspired by the fact that there were some very inherent struggles in that. And so, it will be very interesting to see how Uncle Clifford and new boss b**** Autumn Night deal with this huge obstacle that’s been put in their way. So, between the casino and corona, they’ve got a lot of s*** to deal with.”
