Mooney’s introduction into the entertainment world actually began in the circus. While performing as the ringmaster with Gatti-Charles Circus, the late comedian was always testing out jokes that he’d written. This knack for writing eventually helped him to connect with famous comedian, Richard Pryor.

Paul Mooney wrote for Richard Pryor prior to doing movies, stand up, and TV shows

Mooney wrote for Pryor for years. In addition to being the head writer for The Richard Pryor Show, he also wrote material for some of Pryor’s guest appearances for Saturday Night Live. But Mooney’s career certainly didn’t end with his connection to Pryor. He continued to bolster his net worth by writing for hit shows like In Living Color and acting in movies like Bamboozled and in TV shows like Chappelle’s Show.

Director, Ava DuVernay, also shared some thoughts about Mooney via Twitter. “Paul Mooney,” she wrote. “A comedy giant. I recall listening to his RACE album in college and how formative it was.
