There aren’t many people left that Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.) can trust on Power Book II: Ghost. At present, his freedom still hangs in the balance since he’s on trial for murder. As a result, he’s been leaning solely on his best friend Brayden Weston (Gianni Paolo) and his business partner/lover Effie Morales (Alix Lapri).

Though the pair don’t appear to be in a rush to define their relationship, Lapri says if Effie and Tariq do end up together it would be intense.

Why do Effie and Tariq keep going back to each other on ‘Power Book II: Ghost’?

Tariq and Effie have had tension and friction between them since their high school days at Choate boarding school. Power fans will recall that the duo and Brayden ran an amateur drug business together. Effie and Tariq also had a romance then. However, when Brayden and Tariq cut Effie out of the business she retaliated against them in a major way.

Now, the Yale student is back, and amid his ongoing murder trial, Effie appears to be one of the only people Tariq can trust.

“They kind of understand each other,” Rainey told TV Fanatic. “I feel like out of everyone in Tariq’s universe, Effie is the one that understands him the most. She understands him more than he understands himself. So just seeing them and her trying to be there for him. Also, you see their differences too, so it’s dope seeing their relationship this season, especially.”

Lapri says they are in a bit of a cycle when it comes to their relationship. “I guess it’s a little bit like if you’ve ever had a toxic ex, and sometimes you guys just probably aren’t good for each other at times, but then it’s just like, “Ooh… But…”

Alix Lapri says Effie and Tariq getting together would be a crazy dynamic

With Lauren (Paige Hurd) seemingly out of the running since she was nearly going to testify against Tariq, his affections seem to lie with Effie and Diana (LaToya Tonoedo). While some fans think Tariq and Effie are destined to end up together, Lapri says there might be too much of a power play there.

“It’s really hard to call,” Lapri told TV Fanatic. “Either way, it’s really interesting. If they do end up together, it would be a power move; no pun intended. Two bosses coming together to create this life together. On the other hand, if it went the other way, it shows she doesn’t need a man to do anything, and she is able to separate her feelings from business and move that ship forward and afloat. Either way, it’s a crazy dynamic.”

From where we’re sitting we think Effie wants to be on top and she wants to do so alone.
