‘Power Book II: Ghost’: Mecca Actor Reveals What He Really Thought of That Death

Death is not a new concept on Power Book II: Ghost. The series has caught plenty of bodies since launching on Starz in 2020 — from Lil’ Guap to Jabari Reynolds. But what happened to Mecca felt more pointed and surprising. Daniel Sunjata (Mecca) admits he was also shocked as he expected Mecca to go out with his guns blazing.

What happened to Mecca in ‘Power Book II: Ghost’

Viewers first met Mecca in Power Book II: Ghost Season 2, when he met up with Cane Tejada (Woody McClain) to talk business. Having just returned to New York, he became a drug supplier for the Tejadas. But there was more to him than what met the eye. Mecca specifically had a past with Monet Tejada (Mary J. Blige) and was the birth father of Zeke Cross (Daniel Bellomy), whom she raised as her nephew.

His hope was to reconcile with Monet and create a new life out of the country with her, Zeke, and Monet’s other children. He arranged for Cane to kill Lorenzo Tejada (Berto Colon), but Monet decided to stick with her family after learning Mecca had been manipulating her and intentionally hiding the fact that he was her supplier. She ended not just their relationship but his life by shooting Mecca at point-blank range.

Sunjata’s thoughts on what happened to Mecca

Sunjata thinks the finale was “good,” but he initially was shocked to find out how everything would unfold.

“What I thought was gonna happen was, I thought that they had Mecca and Lorenzo on a collision course,” he told BadCulture TV. “I thought we were gonna have the Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, ‘Fast & Furious,’ big knockdown drag-out fight.”

“I thought it would probably be prefaced by an all-out street war where I’m sending my soldiers and he’s sending his street soldiers,” he continued. “And when I found out it wasn’t going to be that way, I asked, why not. And the answer that I got made a lot of sense.”

“It was, it’s not about you two,” Sunjata noted. “It’s about Monet taking agency over her life and making a choice. And if it’s about you guys fighting and stuff, it detracts from that plot point. So I thought it was really good that they did it that way, but it was unexpected for me. I was positive me and Lorenzo were going to have some kind of a real confrontation, but then it wouldn’t have been about Monet. And it kind of was. It was all about her.”

Mecca’s death means he won’t be on the show anymore, but show creator Courtney Kemp said his and Zeke Cross’ deaths shape Power Book II: Ghost Season 3. Zeke also lost his life in the Power Book II: Ghost Season 2 finale in a case of mistaken identity. He was shot by Lorenzo after he mistook him for Mecca. Lorenzo is covering up what happened, for now, but Kemp teased the truth will come out next season.

‘Power Book II: Ghost’ Season 3 is on the way already

It’s almost agonizing to have to wait to find out what happens next. The good news is, the third season is already in the works, with production kicking off in January. Starz has not shared a definite release date for Power Book II: Ghost Season 3, but it seems possible that it could return within the year based on past patterns and its current status.

In the meantime, check out the other spinoffs, Power Book III: Raising Kanan and Power Book IV: Force, now on Starz.
