Who is Effie on ‘Power Book II: Ghost’?

Effie has been a major part of Tariq’s life since the original Power. Back in their high school days at Choate, she and Tariq had a connection. However, after he and Brayden (Gianni Paolo) cut her out of their drug business, she ratted them out and eliminated them as competiton. Now that she’s back in their lives, fans are still questioning Effie’s intentions.

“Effie Morales, a Yale student no stranger to drama,” her official character description reads. “And her quest for financial freedom via drug dealing leads her to big competition — her former Choate classmates, Tariq and Brayden. But when Effie decides to join forces with Tariq and Brayden again, she will be forced to determine where her loyalties lie — with herself and herself only, or with people who have shown their true colors time and time again.”

What are Effie’s true intentions?

In episode 209, “A Fair Fight?,” fans watched Effie take matters into her own hands when Brayden and Tariq refused to act. She seemingly killed Lauren for exposing them all to the police. However, fans are conflicted about the Yale student’s true intentions.

“The intention with the Effie storyline is that Effie is making a double move and she’s conflicted,” Power Universe creator Courtney Kemp explained on a recent Instagram Live. “What was her motivation to go to Cane (Woody McClain) about Lauren. In terms of her character development, she is conflicted. She does not want to play herself and be “that girl” she wants to do what she wants. What is best for the whole team is that Lauren goes down. [Lauren] is a snitch. She got Cane and Brayden on the wire. Tariq doesn’t want that. Effie’s point of view is clear. Tariq has real feelings for Lauren. But [Effie] is feeling that jealously. It’s the right thing to do but perhaps the wrong reason. Effie is in a complicated frame trying to do what’s best. She does not believe that Lauren has Tariq’s best interest. Lauren was doing what was best for Lauren.”

If Tariq ever finds out what Effie did, there is going to be hell to pay.

Fans will learn a lot more about Effie in ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ Season 3

Though Effie has stepped into the spotlight a lot more this season of Ghost, there is so much about the character that we don’t know. So far, Kemp has revealed that there is no connection at all between the college student and Mecca (Daniel Sunjata). “Effie and Mecca are not related,” she explained on Instagram Live. “They don’t know each other, there is no crossover between those two characters, she is in no way related to any law enforcement.”

However, there are some things about Effie that we do know. “Effie’s mom is a mess. But I’ll tell you about that later,” Kemp revealed in a 2020 Instagram Live. “And if you guys remember, close readers of the series, Effie’s brother is dead. He was murdered, so keep that in mind.”

Much more about Effie’s background will come to light in season 3 of Ghost.
