Power Book III: Raising Kanan is the origin story of one of the most infamous Power characters, Kanan Stark. Though fans were introduced to Kanan in the original Power series where he was portrayed by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, this series finds Kanan during his teen years (portrayed by Mekai Curtis) where he doesn’t yet have all of the hardened rage fueling him.

The series introduces fans to the character, allowing fans to understand why Kanan became the man he was. Now, fans believe that they’ve uncovered a clue that suggests Kanan’s son Shawn (Sinqua Walls) wasn’t really his biological son.

Kanan killed his son Shawn on ‘Power’

When 50 Cent decided to also act in the Power Universe he wanted to portray the worst character ever to be seen on TV. He accomplished this in his portrayal of Kanan Stark. In the original Power series, fans watched in horror when in episode 209, Kanan kills his own son in cold blood, seemingly for revenge against Ghost (Omari Hardwick).

When Shawn is unable to kill Ghost under the direction of Kanan, the older man is disgusted and shoots his son in the stomach and later in the head for showing weakness. With this horrifying death, Shawn became the first main character to die in the Power Universe, and now fans believe they know why Kanan could pull the trigger so easily.

‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ think they found a clue that proves Kanan wasn’t Shawn’s father

Interestingly enough, fans have seemingly uncovered the origin of Shawn’s name. Kanan’s best friend growing up was Shawn “Famous” Figueroa (Antonio Ortiz). Since he’s called Famous in the show, many people may not have picked up that his given name is Shawn. In the character description, he’s described as fiercely loyal to Kanan and his family. Therefore, it would make sense that Kanan would name his son after his best friend.

However, some fans aren’t certain that Kanan was actually Shawn’s father, considering the callous way he murdered him. “I have a feeling Davina is pregnant with Buck Twenty’s baby and out of guilt Kanan raises the baby as his own,” one fan tweeted. “Would explain why Kanan had no problem killing Sean… #RaisingKanan #PowerBookIII.”

This is certainly plausible, but considering how Kanan also callously kills Jukebox (Anika Noni Rose) in Power knowing the connection he’s shared with his cousin since the beginning, we aren’t so sure.

Who is Shawn’s mother in the ‘Power’ Universe?

This certainly seems plausible, except for the fact in Season 2 of Power, we were introduced to Shawn’s mother and Kanan’s longtime lover, Jarita (Tasha Smith). If this theory were to be true, Davina would be Shawn’s mother, unless something happened to her, and Kanan and Jarita raised Shawn as their own.

Since it will be quite sometime before any of this pans out, we’re sure Raising Kanan creator Sascha Penn and Power creator Courtney A. Kemp will reveal the truth in due time. However, what we are also certain of is that once Davina learns the truth about what really happened to Buck Twenty, including Kanan’s involvement, she’s never going to forgive him.
