‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Fans Think Adult Kanan Hinted at the Fate of Detective Howard

'Power Book III: Raising Kanan' has introduced many new characters, including Detective Malcolm Howard. Played by Omar Epps, he's a veteran officer at the local precinct — and he also happens to be Kanan Stark's real father. Fans aren't sure of what exactly happens to him, but one theory says it won't be good.

Fans already knew a lot about Kanan Stark going into Power Book III: Raising Kanan, but no one could have predicted that revelation about his father.

Kicking off in July, the series goes back in time to show how Kanan (Mekai Curtis) turned into the man he was in the 2014 Power series. He’s being reared by his queenpin mother Raquel Thomas (Patina Miller), who’s always told him his dad was deceased gangster Def Con, when Detective Malcolm Howard (Omar Epps) is really Kanan’s biological father.

It’s clear Malcolm wants a relationship with the boy, but fans are worried about how that could turn out for him.

What we know about Detective Malcolm Howard so far

Early into the show, it was obvious that there was some history between Malcolm and Raq. It eventually came out that he’d once had a romantic relationship with her that, unbeknownst to him, produced Kanan.

When he found out, he gave Raq an ultimatum to either connect him with Kanan so that he can tell him the truth or have the information leaked to the streets. She knows it won’t be a good look that she has a past with a cop, putting pressure on her to come clean.

Did the adult Kanan foreshadow what happens to Detective Malcolm Howard?

Malcolm’s days are numbered unless he can get the bone-marrow transplant he needs, but some fans think he’ll still wind up dying. The theory stems from comments Kanan made to Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.) in the original show just before Ghost (Omari Hardwick) died. Tasha St. Patrick (Naturi Naughton) was plotting to kill him, but then Tariq had a hallucination of Kanan telling him not to let her.

As YouTuber Movie Bot notes, Kanan told Tariq he had to be the one to kill Ghost because Ghost would never suspect his son. “It was always gonna go this way. You know it, just gotta step into it,” he said to Tariq. It’s advice that some people think came from past experience with Malcolm.

“Kanan about to put detec Howard in a coffin,” one person said in the comment section.

“Kanan gonna kill det Howard & he gonna call juke after he does it & she’ll be the first person to know,” said another.

Another fan pointed out, “When kanan was talking to Tommy at Tommys apartment in power he said that he never had a Dad. So this could be sign that he kills his Dad (detective Howard) early on or that Detective Howard dies from the cancer.”

Others weren’t so convinced things would unfold that way

At the same time, there were plenty of other theories about Malcolm’s fate.

“I think raq wants to set up Howard to take a bullet,” read one comment.

“I predict Raq is going to lie to Kanan…and say Det. Howard had something to do with his ‘Dad’ Def Con’s death…and urge Kanan to kill Det. Howard…if he goes through with it or not I don’t know,” said another.

We should find out what happens in time. Watch Power Book III: Raising Kanan at 8 p.m. ET on Sundays on Starz.
