‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Star Teases ‘Fractured’ Relationship Between Kanan and Raq Ahead of Season 2

Kanan Stark will do anything for his mother, as evidenced by the events in the first season of 'Power Book III: Raising Kanan.' But it seems like this last move is going to blow up in his face. In an interview, actor Mekai Curtis spoke about their relationship and what he hopes moving forward.

Kanan Stark is learning the hard lesson that he can’t trust anyone — not even his mother. That became especially clear at the end of Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 1, when she sent him to do her dirty work of killing Detective Malcolm Howard, who, unbeknownst to him, is his father. Mekai Curtis, who plays the younger Kanan Stark, discussed their relationship and what he hopes to see next in an interview.

Raquel Thomas manipulated Kanan throughout the first season of ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’

Knowing Kanan will do anything for her, Raq takes advantage of that and orders him to carry out a hit on Detective Howard. When Kanan approaches him in a park, Detective Howard notices him in Unique’s jacket and starts to realize what’s happening. But before he can get the words out that Raq is setting him up, Kanan pulls the trigger.

It’s all part of a larger plan Raq has in place, created by the need to conceal her history with a cop. Unique’s arrest also puts a stop to their war. But Detective Howard ultimately survives the shooting, setting up the next part of the show.

Mekai Curtis on Kanan and Raq’s relationship moving forward

Viewers imagine that if Kanan discovers the truth about Detective Howard, it’ll change his relationship with Raq. But to Curtis, it’s already falling apart.

“I think the relationship now in some ways is already fractured, especially after hearing that she ordered the hit on D-Wiz,” he explained to Entertainment Weekly. “And I feel like even though Kanan says he understands why she did it, he still doesn’t take the fact that she said she was going to stop lying to him and that she went this long without letting him know.”

“Aside from other things, losing one of his closest friends, and now there being an all-out war behind it, he’s kind of just been in a blind fit of rage,” Curtis continued. “So to have that thrown at him in such a heated moment strains the relationship.”

While he doesn’t know when or if Kanan will ever learn his true father, he “can’t wait to see how that plays out.”

When does ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ come back on?

The release date for Raising Kanan Season 2 is not yet known. But Patina Miller, who plays Raq, wrote in a tweet shared on Sunday, Sept. 26 that work on the next episodes had already begun. “We are hard at work on season 2….cant wait for y’all to see it!!!” her tweet said in part.
