‘Power Rangers’: Would a Limited Series with the Original Cast Ever Come to Netflix?

For people born in the 1980s and 1990s, Power Rangers is one of the most nostalgic franchises ever. Thought it was rebooted a few years ago, another reboot film is on its way soon. With all things considered, is it possible that a Netflix version with the original cast would ever be in development?

An original ‘Power Rangers’ star has an idea for an original cast reunion

On the idea of a limited series revival of the series on Netflix, Yost said, ” I mean it’s definitely a rumor, and it’s probably a rumor on my end, but you know I just think it would be great because we’re creeping up on our 30-year anniversary of the original cast and for years we’ve been asked to do a reunion and nothing’s happened…it would be nice to film kind of a limited series.”

Yost actually has specific ideas on how this could be pulled off. He even has a specific streaming service in mind that can host a supposed revival of the series with its classic cast.

He said, “Maybe seven episodes or eight episodes for Netflix and, you know, sort of spend time with each character and see who those characters are and to have like two episodes where the first episode and the last episode sort of involves everybody together but the in-between episodes can sort of dive off into each character and see where they’re at and what they’re up to.”

Yost was one of the original Power Rangers with Austin St. John, Walter Emanuel Jones, Amy Jo Johnson, and the late Thuy Trang. Jason David Frank is often considered a member of the original team. Also, since they starred in the film, Johnny Yong Bosch, Karan Ashley, and Steve Cardenas are also considered team members

‘Power Rangers’ is coming back to the big screen soon

While it would be a nostalgic blessing to see a Power Rangers series with the original cast on Netflix, it would be sort of like Rangers overload, given the bevy of projects that are out now and in the works.

There is, of course, the long-running Power Rangers series. It is in its 27th season, which is the sophomore run of Power Rangers Beast Morphers.

In 2017 came the third theatrical Power Rangers film release. The Lionsgate film starred Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Banks. The film received mostly mixed reviews from critics, despite the fact that most of the performances were met with positive reception. Due to its massive $100 million budget, the film was considered to be a flop at the box office.

The film was supposed to be the beginning of a potential new Power Rangers film franchise, but all of those plans were canceled after the movie’s lukewarm performance.

Even though the film was just released a few years ago and wasn’t a big success, there are already plans for another Power Rangers film franchise. It would be another reboot and none of the cast or the director from the 2017 project would return. Jonathan Entwistle would helm the feature.

Why is there another film reboot so soon?

Hasbro bought the rights to the franchise from creator Haim Saban. Hasbro has a film partnership with Paramount Pictures, and it looks like the rest is history.

The Hollywood Reporter, the outlet that first broke the news says, “Now in Paramount’s court, Power Rangers is getting rebooted once more, in a way that hopes to return the franchise to its roots. The story is said to involve a time-travel element that brings the kids to the 1990s and, in Back to the Future fashion, they have to find a way to get back to their present.”

So while it would be a great idea for the original cast to come back on Netflix, right now, it seems like that would not be a high priority given the new film project that is in the works.
