When Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex announced they would be leaving their roles as senior working royals, one of their main sticking points was that they wanted to be financially independent. For Meghan, who was a self-made millionaire, having people analyze and comb-over how she was spending her money was exhausting.

The couple agreed to pay back the near $3 million they spent on renovating their U.K. estate Frogmore Cottage, and no longer draw from any royal funding. However, since it would take a moment for them to stand on their own financially, despite their immense combined net worth, Prince Charles had reportedly agreed to help them.

Now that the Sussexes have purchased their first-ever home, a $14.7 million estate in Santa Barbara, royal fans are convinced Prince Charles helped them. But that might not actually be true.

Inside Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s new house in Santa Barbara

Since March 2020, the Sussexes, their son, Archie Harrison, and Meghan’s mom, Doria Ragland had been living in Tyler Perry’s $18 million Beverly Hills mansion. The Sussexes are close friends with Oprah Winfrey who is dear friends with Perry, so they were able to connect that way.

Now, it appears that the duo has set up permanent roots 100 miles from LA in their new Santa Barabara estate. The massive estate is 19,000 square feet. It includes nine bedrooms and 16 bathrooms as well as a guest house, a “tea house,” a “children’s cottage,” a full-size tennis court, a lap-lane swimming pool, and an elaborate built-in children’s playset. For safety, the property is tucked behind a private, gated street.

However, amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Sussexes have had to pause on launching their new Archewell foundation and they’ve made no money yet. Therefore there has been a lot of speculation about how they purchased their new house.

Prince Harry is still in close contact with Prince Charles

Despite Megxit, Prince Harry is still very close to his family, especially Prince Charles. Out of everyone in the British royal family, the Prince of Wales was someone who truly made an effort to get close to Meghan, whom he adores.

The duchess also sees the prince as her second father. Prince Charles who understands the pressure of the royal family all too well was said to support the Sussexes at every turn, even though his hands were often tied. A source told The Sun,

Since [Prince Harry’s] move to Los Angeles, they have been in regular contact. Charles is not an avid user of texts but there are video and phone calls The book has never been a massive talking point between them and Charles is determined that it is not an obstacle. Charles knows what it is like to be conflicted within the royal household. Harry has always been his own man and will do what he thinks is right.

Prince Charles did not provide funding for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s new house

Still, despite the fact that Prince Charles pitches in financially for the Sussexes’- massive security bill, he did not provide any funding for the purchase of their Santa Barabara home. Finding Freedom co-author Omid Scobie explained to Entertainment Tonight,

There’s been a lot of speculation about Prince Charles potentially funding this. But this is really a moment for them to find their independence.  They’ve done this on their own. Like many couples, they have a mortgage. Both of them are extremely liquid when it comes to their assets. Harry brings a lot to the table himself and Meghan lives off residuals from Suits and the many appearances that she’s done in other projects too.
