Will Prince Charles Inherit Balmoral Castle and Sandringham Estate When Queen Elizabeth Dies?
A lot will change when Queen Elizabeth dies. To state the obvious, the United Kingdom will no longer have a queen and once again welcome a king to its throne. Prince Charles will ascend as His Majesty and, while his role in the royal family is sure to align with some of his mother’s values, he will likely make a few adjustments that stay true to himself and a more modern monarchy.
When Prince Charles Ascends the throne, he will utilize some of the queen’s royal residences — including Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, which are both owned by The Crown — for his work. But what about his mother’s private homes? Will Prince Charles inherit Balmoral Castle and Sandringham Estate when his mother passes? Find out, ahead.
Prince Charles future royal residences
Despite gaining access to Buckingham Palace, Prince Charles doesn’t plan to live at the royal family headquarters. Instead, we will remain at his current royal residence, Clarence House and use the palace as his office and place for hosting world leaders, banquets, ceremonies, and other events.
“He doesn’t see it as a viable future home or a house that’s fit for purpose in the modern world,” a source revealed to Hello! Magazine. “He feels its upkeep, both from a cost and environmental perspective is not sustainable,” they added.
And, although the heir apparent could argue the same for Windsor Castle — the monarch’s weekend abode — he will likely spend more time in the countryside, as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s family home is located on the Windsor Estate.
As for his mother’s privately owned residences? Prince Charles will most likely inherit both Balmoral and Sandringham Estate. Both royal abodes are typically passed down through monarchs in the royal family. When King George VI died, he left both properties to his eldest child and monarch, Queen Elizabeth. And she will most likely do the same for Prince Charles when she passes.
Where does Prince Charles live now?
These royal residences aren’t the only abodes Prince Charles will have under his name. In addition to Sandringham Estate and Balmoral Castle, the future king will likely keep some of his current homes.
Instead of moving to Buckingham Palace, Prince Charles plans to stay at his current official residence, Clarence House which is located just down the road from the royal family headquarters in London, United Kingdom.
Additionally, he and Camilla Parker Bowles will likely hold onto Highgrove House, which is near Tetbury in Gloucestershire and serves as the couple’s family home.
Prince Charles might inherit Balmoral Castle, but he likely won’t move out of his current residence on the estate. When visiting the family’s Scotland home, he and Camilla Parker Bowles live at Birkhall. The vacation home resides on the castle’s estate and once belonged to the Queen Mother (Clarence House also once belonged to Prince Charles’s grandmother).
The Prince of Wales also owns property in Wales, called Llwynywemod and stays there when he visits the United Kingdom country. While he could choose to keep his Welsh property, he might also choose to gift it to his eldest son, Prince William when he becomes the Prince of Wales.
