Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have taken some much-needed time off for the holidays. The two have been laying low since before Thanksgiving, and they have reportedly been enjoying some downtime near Vancouver, British Columbia with their son, Archie. The couple’s vacation is coming to a close, though, and this holiday leave will either make or break their future as royals.

Meghan and Harry had ups and downs in 2019

There were many positives for the couple in 2019, but unfortunately, there were also many negatives. Harry and Meghan celebrated their one-year anniversary, welcomed their first child, and explored countless charities and organizations through their philanthropic work. But on the downside, the two were bombarded with an array of scandals — many surrounding the duchess. Meghan was constantly in the tabloids for various reasons, from a tense relationship with Kate Middleton to the poor treatment of her staff.

Though the rumors were not proven true, Harry did admit that there was tension between him and his brother. Plus, Harry and Meghan filed a major lawsuit against three British tabloids over the treatment of them in the press. All of the rumors and stories have tarnished the couple’s reputation and made it hard for Meghan to adapt to royal life.

The two took an extended break at the end of the year

Harry and Meghan announced toward the end of 2019 that they would not be spending the holidays in the United Kingdom. Rather, the two were going to spend time with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, in North America. Though there were stories about a family feud, the royal family announced that the queen had approved of the couple’s absence from the holiday celebrations.

Meghan and Harry spent that past six weeks flying under the radar; their Instagram account has posted far less frequently, and with the exception of a photo of Harry and Archie, the two hardly gave any hints to their whereabouts during their break (though it has been largely suspected that they were in Canada).

Their holiday leave could have a big impact on their future as royals

Meghan and Harry will return from their break shortly, and their absence could play a large role in their future as royals. The couple probably felt that they needed to hit the reset button with the public. This absence might give them a fresh start in the public eye and a chance to turn their reputation around. It could make everyone forget about 2019 and give them a second chance, and it might allow Harry and Meghan to present themselves in a new light in 2020.

On the other hand, the absence could have made people lose faith in the couple. Some saw their departure as rude and insulting to the queen, though a source close to the family said the couple’s absence was not meant to be an insult “whatsoever.”  But it might only result in more people turning their backs on the couple. Right now, it’s unclear how the British public will handle Meghan and Harry’s comeback. They might welcome the two with open arms or push them away even further for having left the royal life behind for so long.
