Many royals have taken to social media to connect with fans and share their work. However, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are rather private and not on these platforms. According to a royal expert, this could be costing the Duke and Duchess of Sussex some of their popularity.

In April 2019, Harry and Meghan launched their @SussexRoyal account on Instagram. They were still full-time royals, and the Instagram page would highlight their work and promote causes that the Sussexes are passionate about.

Five hours and 45 minutes after its launch, the page had gained one million followers. This was a Guinness World Record at the time. Previously, the record was held by K-pop star Kang Daniel, who reached one million followers in 11 hours and 36 minutes. Harry and Meghan no longer hold this record, however, as some celebrities have been able to gain one million followers in an hour or less.

Nonetheless, the Sussexes had quite a popular Instagram page back then. Most of their posts received hundreds of thousands of likes. Whenever the couple uploaded videos, they also received millions of views.

In 2020, when Harry and Meghan stepped down as senior royals and moved to the United States, they were no longer allowed to use the Sussex Royal brand. As such, the couple stopped posting on the account, though they have not established another public page for fans to follow.

The Sussexes’ lack of social media presence could be affecting their popularity, expert says

Nowadays, whenever Harry and Meghan have an announcement to make, they usually release it on the website of their charity organization, Archewell. According to royal commentator Neil Sean, this lack of social media presence could be costing the Sussexes some popularity.

“As you know, Harry and Meghan decided to block down on social media,” Sean said in a YouTube video. “They didn’t want to get involved because they thought it was full of toxicity, as they said, and there were too many negatives attached to that. But as they’re now finding out, their popularity slumped because they’re not on social media.”

Sean compared the Sussexes to Prince William and Kate Middleton, who are active on platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. He explained, “Catherine and William are becoming incredibly popular through their social media channels. This is simply because they are putting out content on there that people want to know.”

Sean claimed that Harry and Meghan could be reevaluating their decision to not be on social media, and it seems the couple could return in the near future.

Before getting engaged to Harry, Meghan ran a lifestyle blog called The Tig. It was shut down in 2017.

However, in late January, the Daily Mail alleged that a new application had been filed to trademark the name “The Tig” back in July 2021. The company that filed the application is Frim Fram Inc., which has been linked to Meghan’s business manager Andrew Meyer. This discovery has led some people to believe Meghan could be restarting her brand.
