When Kate Middleton first began dating Prince William, Prince Harry was reportedly thrilled to have her around. Kate became somewhat of an older sister to Harry through the years, and once Kate and William were married, Harry lived close by, and the three had a great relationship.

Now, though, things have changed. Harry has been married to Meghan Markle for nearly two years, and the dynamic between the “Fab Four” seems like it needs work. But Harry and Kate likely haven’t forgotten how close they once were — and his royal departure might be exactly what he and Kate need.

Harry and Kate used to be extremely close

When Kate first started dating William, Harry was only 19 years old. Kate and William became a couple in 2004, and she and Harry immediately became close. It took Harry a bit longer to settle down, so for years, he, Kate, and William were a royal trio. Harry even lived close by to his brother and sister-in-law, and he reportedly had a very close relationship with his niece and nephew as well. But once Harry met Meghan, he was smitten, and everything changed.

When Harry met Meghan Markle, things unraveled between him and the Cambridges

Many people suggest that Meghan tore Harry away from his family, but that isn’t necessarily the case. Often when people fall for someone, they make that person their priority in every circumstance. And when Harry met Meghan, he was immediately smitten — that’s likely what led to his slow but certain separation from William and Kate. Harry was suddenly dropping everything for the woman he loved — even his family.

Things between Harry and the Cambridges slowly started to unravel. He and Meghan were becoming their own duo, which caused the trio to divide. And eventually, Harry and Kate’s brother-and-sister relationship dwindled. The two hardly spend any time together anymore, and Harry even admitted to there being a bit of a rift between him and his brother. Plus, there were constant rumors that Kate and Meghan were at odds.

Harry and Meghan’s royal exit might actually save his relationship with Kate

2020 started off with some major news: Harry and Meghan would step back from their roles as senior royals. According to Vanity Fair, Kate hasn’t handled the news well — after all, she and Harry have a long history of being close. But it’s possible that Harry and Meghan’s separation from the rest of the family might actually be exactly what Kate and Harry need.

The Sussexes were clearly unhappy with their lives in the royal family, and that never sets a good foundation for a family relationship. Now that they’ll be on their own, they will likely be much happier, and it might result in an overall better relationship between the two of them and the rest of the royals. Distance often makes the heart grow fonder, and Kate and Harry spending time apart might help them forget about the bad times and only remember the good. It might also prompt all of the royals to enjoy the limited time they do spend together.

Harry and Kate might certainly miss their close friendship once Harry permanently leaves the family, and it could prompt either of them to reach out to the other. In time, it will likely have been the best decision Harry and Meghan could have made. And if Harry and Kate become close once more, it could even fix things between him and his brother.
