Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex‘s bombshell announcement to “step down as senior royals” has left many questions about what life will look like for England’s most famous family going forward.

The prince and former actress’ exit from royal life does leave a void with a number of charities and organizations they headed and were a part of for so long. That includes the role of Captain-General Royal Marines, which Harry took on for his grandfather, Prince Philip, after he retired in 2017. Read on to find out who Philip reportedly wants to replace his grandson and how he feels about the duke and duchess’ decision to step down.

How Prince Philip reacted to Megxit

No one in the royal family was aware that Harry and Meghan were going to make their public statement when they did. This was evident when Queen Elizabeth herself seemed to be blindsided by the decision and called for a royal summit with Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry at Sandringham.

The first time Prince Philip was seen out in public since the news of what’s been called “Megxit” was the day the queen called for that meeting. The monarch’s husband was spotted leaving the estate ahead of the summit and did not look happy.

So what does Philip think of Harry and Meghan’s plans?

An insider told the British tabloids that when the royal family patriarch learned about his grandson and Meghan’s announcement he shouted, “What the hell are they playing at?”

Another source who spoke to The Sun explained, “To say that the duke feels let down would be a considerable understatement. A lot of Philip’s anger comes from seeing Her Majesty upset.”

Following the meeting, Queen Elizabeth released a statement supporting the Sussexes intentions to step down.

Who Philip wants to take over as Captain-General of the Marines

The question remains who will now take over the position of Captain-General of the Royal Marines. According to a royal expert, the Duke of Edinburgh already has someone in mind who would be the “perfect” replacement for Harry and that person is his daughter, Princess Anne.

Royal author Brian Hoey told The Sun that “Princess Anne is already Admiral Chief Commandant of the Royal Navy and the duke believes she would be the perfect choice for the Marines. When Prince Philip stepped down in 2017 he was delighted that Afghan veteran Harry would take over from him.”

Hoey added that Philip now feels “Prince Harry has let down the Royal Marines by quitting after just two years” and “would like Anne to take over.”

If that were to happen, the Princess Royal would be the first female Captain-General of the 7,000 Royal Marines Corps in more than 150 years.

Prince Harry served in the armed forces for 10 years and was deployed to Afganistan twice. After the royal summit, it was announced that he will be stepping down from his military roles including Honorary Air Commandant of Royal Air Force Base Honington, and Honorary Commodore-in-Chief of Small Ships and Diving, Royal Naval Command.
