Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been in the news more than ever (likely the opposite of what they were hoping for) since they announced that they are leaving the royal family. Harry and Meghan are officially in North America after being apart for a while, and so begins a new chapter for not only the Sussexes but also every member of the royal family.

Despite the big news, Prince William and Kate Middleton have proven through their Instagram account that they are doing just fine without their brother- and sister-in-law.

Harry and Meghan’s news wasn’t as shocking as it seemed

Prior to the couple’s big announcement, they took a six-week hiatus from royal life to enjoy a bit of privacy. But clearly, they were actually exploring the place they would soon call home. Harry and Meghan had been berated by the press for almost three years by the time they announced their departure from the family, and many assumed it was only a matter of time until something changed.

From the moment Meghan and Harry wed, they had been breaking royal tradition. The constant negativity, plus their desire for a more normal life, created the perfect storm for their departure.

Harry had previously revealed a rift between him and his brother

When Harry and Meghan took a tour of Southern Africa, they decided to create a documentary about their royal lives in the process. In the documentary, Harry revealed something that everyone had suspected for quite a while: He and William were no longer as close as they used to be. Of course, people get married and start families, which creates some natural separation. But Harry danced around the subject so as to suggest that he didn’t want to fully admit there were real problems between him and his brother.

William and Kate’s Instagram account proves they’re doing just fine

Ever since Harry and Meghan’s official departure, William and Kate have been posting to Instagram more than ever. Last year, there were often stretches of two or three days where the Kensington Royal account was silent. But lately the Cambridges have been posting every day — often more than once per day.

Between January 15 and January 22, the couple posted to Instagram 10 times. Comparatively, between December 15 and December 22, there were only seven posts. The two have been increasing their Instagram presence, likely because they want to further define themselves as the next generation of working royals and prove they don’t need Harry and Meghan.

William and Kate seem prepared to step up

William and Kate never mentioned Harry and Meghan’s departure on their Instagram account, likely because they don’t want the Sussex’s exit to have an impact on the work they’ve been doing. The two are now carving out an even more meaningful role for themselves, as they are the only members of their generation who are working royals. (William’s cousins technically have royal titles but are not “working” royals). It’s clear that William and Kate are stepping up and taking their role even more seriously than before.
