In March 2021, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex had an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey. It reportedly added more to the rift between the Sussexes and the rest of the royal family.

According to a royal expert, Harry’s older brother, Prince William, still cannot get over what happened in order to heal the rift.

The Sussexes criticized the royal family during the Oprah interview

During the interview with Oprah, which aired on CBS on March 7, Harry and Meghan criticized the royal family.

For example, Meghan claimed the institution neglected her in many ways. She said that she was not given proper training as a royal, staffers ignored her mental health struggles, and she was isolated from the rest of the world. Meghan also accused an unnamed royal of making racially motivated statements about her and Harry’s son, Archie.

Additionally, Harry said he was “really let down” by his father after the Sussexes stepped down. Reportedly, Charles did not return Harry’s calls and cut him off financially.

After the interview aired, Buckingham Palace released a statement in response. The statement read, “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

William also pushed back at accusations of racism, telling reporters at an event, “We are not a racist family.”

Prince William ‘cannot move on’ from what happened, royal expert says

The interview likely did not do much to heal the rift between the Sussexes and other royals. According to one royal expert, William is having a hard time moving forward after what Harry and Meghan did.

“For Prince William himself, I am told that he really cannot move on from that diabolical interview that the twosome gave way back in March,” commentator Neil Sean said, according to Express.

Sean added, “A lot of people are saying ‘oh eventually he’ll get over that and they’ll be able to reconcile’, well for those that know Prince William well, basically Prince William will not be moving forward from that because he doesn’t see a reason to. He doesn’t truly understand what the motivation was behind the duo sitting down to do the interview, and for them that could be their very own undoing.”

Harry will be publishing a memoir in 2022 that shares more information about his time in the royal family. Many people believe that, once again, the royal family will be cast in a negative light. Author Angela Levin also thinks the memoir will hurt William the most.

“William is the one who will come out of this the worst of all,” Levin said. “There is the row between William and Harry, and basically if Harry says things that are inappropriate about the monarchy, that is William’s future. It is not Harry’s future, he is out of it now, but it is William’s future.”
