Even though Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge married a prince, her relationship is hardly a fairy tale. Rumors of his reported infidelity have surrounded the couple for years, and some body language experts don’t think the Duchess of Cambridge is very close to her husband.

Plus, their relationship was somewhat rocky from the start. Queen Elizabeth supposedly didn’t want Kate to join the royal family, and Prince William even broke up with Kate before their eventual marriage. New details about that breakup paint the prince as somewhat cruel.

According to a new book about the royal family, Battle of Brothers, Prince William broke up with Kate in 2007 over the phone. The book, written by Royal Historian Robert Lacey, paints Prince William as a fickle and insensitive boyfriend.

Apparently, Kate was at work in 2007, where she was a buyer for a fashion company. Prince William, who was 25 at the time, dumped Kate during an hour-long phone conversation. He claimed he was “uncertain” about their future together when he made the decision to end things.

Interestingly, it wasn’t the first time Prince William broke up with Kate. The two had split previously in 2004. They met in college, at St. Andrew’s University. Although a lot of couples get together in college and stay together, Prince William and Kate were not one of them.

In 2004, Prince William said they were “were both very young,” and therefore decided to break up. That sounds similar to his reason for breaking up with Kate again in 2007.

Kate Middleton was at work when Prince William broke up with her

As if breaking up with her over the phone weren’t bad enough, Kate was at work when Prince William dropped the bomb on her. In fact, she was in a meeting. She was new on the job, and probably still trying to make a name for herself at the company, Jigsaw.

According to Lacey, “Kate excused herself from a meeting at Jigsaw, the fashion store with which she’d recently started working, to take a call from William in a room out of earshot of the other buyers.” The phone call took an hour.

Breaking up with Kate while she was at work shows a lack of respect for her career. Kate didn’t work long before dropping out of the workforce to join the royal family, but before she and Prince William were engaged, she was serious about her career.

Prince William, however, obviously didn’t take into consideration that Kate was at work and it might be a bad place for her to be receiving such news. Had he considered it, he would have waited until after work to break up with her.

That faithful phone call occurred on April 11th, 2007. Almost exactly four years later, on April 29th, 2011, Kate and Prince William were engaged. Their 2007 breakup didn’t last long.

Despite the callous way that Prince William decided to end things between them, Kate didn’t seem to take the breakup hard. She was seen out partying in London and enjoying her new single life.

Prince William, on the other hand, seemed to hate being apart from Kate, and from the rest of the Middleton family. Lacey speculates that the prince’s relationship with Kate’s mother and father may have led to him getting back together with her. Prince William spent a lot of time with the Middletons and may see them as a second set of parents.

Either way, less than three months after breaking up with Kate over the phone, the two were back together. Kate was apparently able to forgive William for his disregard for her feelings and career.
