Relationships can sometimes ruffle feathers, and in the case of Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, their marriage did reportedly lead to conflicts with people around them. According to various sources, Prince William raised concerns when Harry first started dating Meghan. Harry ended up marrying Meghan, but a royal expert now believes William’s warning turned out to be correct.

Why did Prince William warn Prince Harry about Meghan Markle?

In 2019, news reports began claiming William had concerns that Harry was moving too fast with Meghan. The couple did, indeed, get engaged after one and a half year of dating while William courted his wife, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge for almost 10 years.

Earlier this year, a biography released about Harry and Meghan also talked about this alleged confrontation. Called Finding Freedom, it claimed William wanted to “make sure the American actress had the right intentions” and that “Harry wasn’t blindsided by lust.”

According to the authors of Finding Freedom, William reported told his younger brother, “Don’t feel you need to rush this. Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.”

A royal expert believes Prince William’s warning turned out to be correct

No one in the royal family has publicly spoken about this event, but many sources believe William did voice some concerns to Harry about his relationship with Meghan. Most notably, royal author Robert Lacey, who has worked as an adviser on the Netflix show The Crown, shared that he believes William’s warning turned out to be correct.

“Meghan is a self-made woman; she becomes a star; she becomes a self-made millionaires,” Lacey said, as reported by the Daily Mail. “’I think when William sat down with Harry and said there could be problems, I think events have proved him right.”

Lacey’s claim stems from the criticism Meghan has been receiving this past year. She and Harry stepped down as senior royals in early 2020 and quickly set up a new life in North America. Then, the couple began voicing opinions on issues like the U.S. election and #BlackLivesMatter—things that can be considered political in the current climate. Royals often stay far away from these issues to maintain political neutrality.

According to Lacey, this could be causing conflicts between Harry and his family. He said, “Meghan acknowledged that it’s risky for her family to get involved in controversial issues… I think that she has come to realise how [some of her] speeches risk her husband’s relationship with the family and perhaps she may pedal back on some of these more extreme positions.”

Prince William was reportedly also ‘disturbed’ by something Meghan Markle did

The “problems” did not just show up now, however. When Meghan was still a part of the royal family, William reportedly disagreed with something she did as well.

In the summer of 2019, Meghan guest-edited an issue of Vogue and received a lot of criticism for it. She used the issue to highlight a number of influential women around the world, though many people did not like that political leaders such as Former First Lady Michelle Obama and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern were included.

Lacey alleged that William also felt “disturbed” by Meghan’s Vogue issue. The author said in another Daily Mail article, “William did not see his future role as monarch – nor his current role as heir – as a matter of him working to maintain the nation’s feelings in harmony while his activist brother and his wife jumped up and down beside him cultivating political and cultural divisions in pursuit of their trendy vision of doing good. Windsors do not do ‘woke.’”
