Prince Harry opens up in interviews about stepping away from the royal family

In his shocking interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry revealed he felt he needed to step back as a working royal. The reason: to protect his family after Meghan came to him and said she was having thoughts of harming herself.

“By that point, I took matters into my own hands,” Harry told Oprah. “It was like, ‘I need to do this for my family.’ This is not a surprise to anybody. It’s really sad that it’s gotten to this point, but I’ve got to do something for my own mental health, my wife’s, and for Archie’s, as well, because I could see where this was headed.”

Since then, Harry has done several more interviews. He has a new series, The Me You Can’t See, and he discussed therapy on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.

“It was like someone had taken a lid off, [and] all of the emotions that I’ve suppressed for so many years suddenly came to the forefront,” he said on the podcast of starting therapy. “And I saw GPs [general practitioners], I saw doctors, I saw therapists, I saw alternative therapists. I saw all sorts of people. But it was meeting and being with Meghan, I knew that if I didn’t do therapy and fix myself, that I was going to lose this woman who I could see spending the rest of my life with.”

During the podcast, Harry also spoke about the confines of royal life. And he discussed the trauma he endured while living under the pressure of being royal.

Princess Diana’s butler has a warning for Prince Harry

Paul Burrell was a butler to the royal family for many years and served Princess Diana for a decade. He recently spoke to Closer to share his worries about Harry’s openness about his mental health.

“There’s no doubt it’s a great idea for Harry to have help and therapy,” he told the magazine. “But therapy is supposed to be confidential — it doesn’t work on the world stage. Doing what he’s doing is only going to cause him so much more pain. I don’t recognise him now — he’s almost become the centre of his own world. He’s hurting his family and saying things that I really think he’ll regret. Meghan has encouraged him to get therapy and change his way of thinking — but I think he’ll be left broken when this all stops and he realises what he’s done.”

He went on to allege that Meghan was behind Harry’s willingness to do interviews.

“He’s been blinded by Meghan, by her beauty and by this Hollywood world,” he said. “I think now it could only be Meghan who can stop him from doing these interviews and doing any more damage, and destroying himself. He won’t heal if he keeps doing this — it’ll make things worse in the long run. I honestly have no idea when it will stop.”
