When does season 5 come out?

The wait for Queen of the South has been longer than usual. Typically, a new season drops at the top of the summer and ends in August or September. With season 5, Newsweek reported that it entered production in March 2020 with plans on releasing it that June. But unfortunately, there was a delay due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Now, instead of that initial release date, the fifth season will premiere in April 2021. USA Network announced the premiere date on March 1 along with a teaser trailer showing what’s to come. “And just like that, the Queen will be taking her throne this April. (And just like that, our countdown begins!)” read the tweet.

What is season 5 about?

At this point, Teresa is deeper in the cartel than ever, finally becoming the queenpin. As co-showrunner Ben Lobato told Entertainment Weekly about her life in season 4, “This is the season that Teresa discovers that there’s no getting out. It’s now impossible for her to hold onto her moral code while running a drug cartel.”

Beyond that, Teresa has enemies on her tail, including whoever it is that James said is “coming” for her at the end of season 4. Without going into too much detail, Braga warned fans in an interview with Digital Spy that the next season will bring “a lot of trouble” to Teresa.

“I cannot tease much. They’re going to kill me if I do! [laughs] But definitely, what I can say is that Teresa’s going to get in a lot of trouble,” she said. “She’s becoming the boss. She already has the business, but a lot’s going to happen in season five because she got to that point where she really is a powerful woman, like everybody thought that she would be.”

Does that mean her downfall is near? That remains to be seen, but it looks like things will definitely be a little more hectic for her in season 5. Remember to watch Queen of the South in April, and stay tuned to us for any details that may come up in the time until then.
