Black Rob signed to Bad Boy Records

Born June 8, 1969, in Buffalo, New York, Robert Ross began rapping around the age of 12. He joined rap group the Schizophrenics at the age of 22 as “Bacardi Rob” before settling on Black Rob.

The rapper started affiliating with artists signed to Sean Combs’ Bad Boy label in 1996 when he appeared on 112’s remix “Come See Me” and then continued to appear on numerous Bad Boy projects throughout the late 90s.

Additionally, he featured on albums from Cru, Ol Dirty Bastard, and Benzino, which grew his popularity. The rapper released his debut album Life Story in 2000 via Bad Boy, and it peaked at number three on the US Billboard 200 charts.

It also contained “Whoa!” which hit number 43 on the charts, becoming his only single to reach the Hot 100.

The rapper left Bad Boy after a prison stint

Black Rob attempted to follow his success with another album, The Black Rob Report (2005), but it didn’t perform nearly as well.

The following year, the New York native received a seven-year prison sentence for failing to appear in court for a 2004 grand larceny charge.

He was released in May 2010 and departed from Bad Boy in the same year. The “Whoa!” rapper later signed to an independent label before launching his own, where he dropped Game Tested, Streets Approved.

In 2013, Black Rob joined the cast of the reality show Come Back Kings and has continued to release music. He dropped his most recent project in 2015 with a mixtape, Genuine Article.

On Apr. 9, following rapper DMX’s death, radio personality DJ Self shared a video of Black Rob paying tribute to the New York-based artist looking unwell in a hospital bed, concerning fans.

Another clip of him surfaced a couple of days later where the rapper noted he had dealt with a condition for the past five years, underwent four strokes, and didn’t have a place to live.

Black Rob continued to talk about his difficult situation but had trouble getting the words out before telling the person behind the camera that he wanted to rest.

On Apr. 17, the 51-year-old reportedly died in an Atlanta-based hospital following a battle with kidney failure. According to BiographyDaily.com, the rapper had a net worth of $2.3 million as of 2021.

However, Black Rob stated he didn’t have a place to live in the Apr. 11 video, leading fans to believe he was homeless at the time of his death. DJ Self and Bad Boy rapper Mark Curry have commented on the artist, but Combs has yet to release a statement.
