Actress and CEO Gwyneth Paltrow has taken to going viral for saying some very offbeat things. In 2019, she had one of her weirdest moments yet, when she revealed to the world that she didn’t know she had been in the MCU flick Spider-Man: Homecoming. But don’t worry, she has a good reason. Read on to learn what it is.

Gwyneth Paltrow has been in these Marvel movies

Paltrow has been involved in the MCU since the very beginning. The film that kicked everything off, Iron Man, in 2008, featured her as Virginia “Pepper” Potts, the assistant to Tony Stark. But her role would only grow from there, leading to her eventual appearance as Rescue.

In total, Paltrow has been in seven Marvel movies: The three Iron Man flicks, three out of four Avengers movies (The Avengers, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame), and, of course, Homecoming. But her part in the last four titles mentioned was quite small, and likely blended together for some.

Jon Favreau told her she was in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

The viral moment in question began when Paltrow filmed an episode of Jon Favreau’s Netflix series The Chef Show with him. He was telling her how the whole thing got started, saying that it began while the two of them were shooting Spider-Man: Homecoming. “Spider-Man? We weren’t in Spider-Man.” He went on to explain to her that they were, actually.

The scene Favreau’s referring to specifically comes at the very end of the film. Pepper comes out and tells Tony and Favreau’s Happy Hogan that she has “a roomful of people waiting for some big announcement” which can no longer happen because Peter Parker decided not to join the Avengers just yet.

Though it sounds ridiculous, in actuality, it’s not that hard to understand why Paltrow didn’t know which movie the scene was in. The Marvel productions are shrouded in secrecy, even from the actors themselves. This, combined with how they film with the same people for years in a row on different movies, may have added to the confusion.

Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel recently, she said essentially this. “There’s so many of these wonderful Marvel interconnecting movies. And I thought it was an Avengers movie but it was not,” said Paltrow. She also confessed that she never saw Homecoming, which checks out, as she wasn’t at the premiere.

What did Tom Holland think of this?

“I’ve only worked with Gwyneth one time, on Spider-Man: Homecoming, which she doesn’t remember. Which still to this day, breaks my heart,” said Holland in an interview for the 2019 sequel, Spider-Man: Far From Home.

He also spoke about the above photo, which was apparently taken during the filming of Avengers: Endgame, and in which she also appears to not know who he is. Paltrow shared the photo on Downey Jr.’s birthday in 2018, and wrote in the caption, “Love me and that other guy in the photo.”
