Kate Middleton has been a member of the royal family since she married Prince William in 2011, and she has grown into one of the world’s most well-known style and beauty icons. The Princess of Wales’ fashion sense has become a topic of conversation around the world. “What will Kate Middleton wear?” is a question those in the style world are always dying to know. But a major aspect of Kate’s look is her hair — and she rarely wears it up.

The princess’ hair requires dozens of products to look perfect

Kate Middleton’s hair is something that never goes undiscussed. Regardless of which royal event she’s attending, people always gawk at her perfectly blown-out look. Most of the time, the princess wears it straight, but she occasionally adds some waves to spice things up now and then. And apparently, it’s no easy task to get her hair to look the way it does.

Kate’s hairstylist, Amanda Cook Tyler, once posted a photo to Instagram featuring all of the products used on Kate’s hair — and there were a ton. The photo has since been deleted, but it consisted of 13 brushes and six combs, plus a slew of hot styling tools and plenty of different sprays, serums, and creams. The United Kingdom is usually very humid, so it makes sense that Kate would need plenty of products to keep her hair in good shape.

All of her most iconic looks feature her hair down

The princess doesn’t seem to be a huge fan of updos. Most of her looks keep it casual: Her hair is almost always down, and though it looks picture perfect, there isn’t much to it. It’s never full of clips or curls; most of the time, she keeps things simple with a blowout for volume. The duchess occasionally attends an event with wavy hair, but she is rarely spotted wearing an updo. Typically, the only time Kate is seen wearing her hair up is when there is some kind of fascinator atop her head.

The princess supposedly wears her hair down to hide a scar on the side of her head

While no one thinks it’s a bad thing that Kate always wears her hair down, there might actually be a reason for it. Kate has a noticeable scar on the left side of her head; most of the time, her hair covers it. However, on those infrequent days when she wears her hair up, the public gets a close look at the mark. Her hair doesn’t seem to grow in that spot, and it could be something that makes her feel self-conscious.

A spokesperson for the princess said the scar was the result of an operation Kate had as a child. Any operation on the head can seem serious, but consulting surgeon Dr. John Scurr told The Daily Mail that it likely was the removal of some kind of birth mark and not anything more serious.
