Jason Wahler revealed why he returned to reality TV for a reboot of The Hills. During an interview with Access Hollywood, Wahler took a walk down memory lane regarding his time spent on The Hills and Laguna Beach. He talked about the infamous scene when Lauren Conrad, the show’s main character, decided to spend the summer with him rather than go to Paris, France as a Teen Vogue intern. 

Why Jason Wahler returned to ‘The Hills’

He explained how far he’d come since The Hills, referencing his alcohol addiction. On the show, Wahler spent many scenes frequenting popular L.A. nightclubs with the rest of the cast although he never confronted his issues on camera. In the last decade, Wahler’s dealt with his addiction and is now sober.

Wahler who has been very forthcoming about his sobriety told the outlet his addiction had everything to do with why he joined the reboot.

Sitting with his wife and mother of his child, Ashley Wahler, The Hills alum explained why he signed on for the show. 

“10 or 12 years ago I went through a very public battle with addiction, you know, and for me to come back and be sober now, and to show what recovery looks like … it’s a great opportunity,” Wahler said.

He continued, saying he wanted “to come back and be able to show that life in recovery is absolutely amazing and you can actually find a life that’s worth living.”

Wahler frequently checks in with his Instagram followers about his sobriety with pictures and videos. Recently, he shared a video of he and Ashley discussing codependency. 

Ashley Wahler on joining ‘The Hills: New Beginnings’: ‘It seemed like a no-brainer’

In a solo interview with Cosmopolitan, Ashley, who “didn’t watch the show religiously,”  shed further light on her and her husband’s decision to join the cast of The Hills: New Beginnings. Ashley noted how open her husband has been and continues to be about his sobriety but she said they didn’t say agree to it right away. 

“My husband I talked about it so much, and because we have such an interesting relationship and we’ve gone through so much and we’re still together and married and happy, we really wanted to share our experience with others,” Ashley said. 

She continued, “Especially when it comes to recovery because Jason had such a public battle with his struggle with addiction. It seemed like a no-brainer that right now, our society needs people that are going to try and help others.”Since filming on Season 1 of The Hills: New Beginnings has wrapped, they have a break from the camera but they both continue to be supportive of each other.
