Jada Pinkett Smith tried to protect Willow Smith

In the newest episode of Red Table Talk, Willow opened up about how her mom tried to shield her from dangerous relationships with men.

“You definitely prepared me for the danger of men,” Willow said to Jada. “When I was younger it was like, ‘Men are dangerous, first of all.’”

When Jada denied ever saying men were dangerous, Willow conceeded that that was just how she received her mom’s message.

“No, you didn’t tell me that but, the way that you would talk to me, in my little brain, my brain said, ‘Men equal danger,’” she said.

Jada revealed that she was just trying to protect Willow as she got older and wanted to go into more potentially dangerous situations.

“I said, ‘You’re becoming a young lady…’ Because she wanted to hang out with guys who were older than her, by herself. And I’m like, ‘That’s a no-go. There’s no you hanging out with nobody alone,'” Jada said.

During the conversation with Rumer Willis and Amber Rose, the women talked about consent and the gray area of what can be consent.

“So, Gam, you feel like nowhere in your history in regards to sexual intimacy have you felt like you had a sexual experience that was not necessarily consensual,” Jada asked her mother.

Banfield-Norris revealed that she had and it was with her ex-husband, Jada’s father Robsol Pinkett Jr.

Adrienne’s relationship with Jada’s father

Banfield-Norris married Robsol after getting pregnant with Jada. The marriage was very short-lived. In a previous episode of Red Table Talk, Jada revealed that the relationship had been abusive.

“I knew that my mother and my father had a very violent relationship early on,” she said, according to People. “She has a couple scars on her body that, as a child, I was just curious. I was like, ‘Oh, Mommy, what’s that? What’s that?’ … This will be the first time that Willow’s actually heard these stories about her grandfather who she knew.”

Rumer Willis reveals she also had non-consenual sex

The women also discussed how blurry the line of consent can be. Willis admitted that when she lost her virginity, she didn’t say no but she also didn’t say yes.

“When I lost my virginity when I was 18, I was more concerned with the shame that I was feeling at not having done it,” she said. “I was not abused or it was not rape. But I didn’t say yes. I wasn’t gung-ho about it. But I also didn’t say no, I just let it happen.”

“He was older and took advantage but…and didn’t check in,” she continued. “That’s where I feel like the man’s responsibility is. No means no but what if you can’t say no?”
